The new generation of the Audi 3.0 L V6 TDI engine

Richard Bauder; Andreas Fröhlich; Danilo Rossi

Following on from Audi’s 2003 production launch of the first generation of the 3.0 I V6 TDI engine, 2010 now marks the launch of the second generation — a completely newly developed unit successfully combining low fuel consumption, low emissions, high power output along with significantly reduced engine weight. This accomplishment is based on a large number of innovative solutions, focused particularly on minimising friction and on lightweight construction. The familiar Audi four-valve combustion method has been thermodynamically modified. The fuel injection system is an updated piezo-inline common rail unit delivering up to 2000 bar maximum rail pressure. The turbocharger has also been modified to provide enhanced spontaneity. In the following design and the mechanics of the new engine are described, the second part in the MTZ 11 deals with thermodynamics, application and exhaust treatment.

Manfred Bach; Richard Bauder; Andreas Fröhlich; Henning Hoffmann; Steffen Muth; Gerd Seifried

Manfred Bach; Richard Bauder; Andreas Fröhlich; Wolfgang Hatz; Henning Hoffmann; Henning Marckwardt; Hans-Werner Pölzl

The 4.0-litre V8 TDI now being introduced by Audi is the first diesel in its new family of V engines. The new V8 diesel is notable for its high power output of 202 kW and vigorous torque of 650 Nm. Its noise pattern and refinement are excellent. This V8 TDI engine harmonises convincingly with the new Audi A8, making it the most sporty diesel-engine car in the large luxury class. Development of the new engine is described in two articles. The first part presents the engine’s design and mechanical features, while the second describes its thermodynamics and applications.

The Audi 6.0 l V12 TDI engine

Manfred Bach; Richard Bauder; Andreas Fröhlich; Klaus Gabel; Wolfgang Hatz; Henning Hoffmann; Henning Marckwardt

With the newly developed 6.0 l V12 TDI engine, Audi presents the world’s most powerful and high-torque diesel engine in a passenger car. The V12 TDI is characterised by its extremely high power output of 368 kW and 1,000 Nm of torque. The 6.0 TDI features in the Audi Q7. This new engine puts the Audi Q7 into the same league as the sportiest high-performance SUVs, while delivering the low fuel consumption that is typical of a TDI. On the one hand the engine has typical 12-cylinder design features, such as the 60° angle between the cylinder banks, whereas on the other hand a large number of synergies with the familiar Audi V6 and V8 TDI engines have been implemented. It rounds off the Audi V-engine range at the top end. The development of the new engine is illustrated in two reports. The first part describes the design and the mechanics, while the second part in MTZ 11/2008 deals with thermodynamics, application and exhaust treatment.

The new 4,2-I-TDI-V8 engine from Audi

Manfred Bach; Richard Bauder; Andreas Fröhlich; Henning Hoffmann; Steffen Muth; Gerd Seifried

Audi’s 4,2-I-V8-TDI engine reveals the consistent onward development of the 4,0-I-TDI engine that hitherto had been offered in the Audi A8. The new V8 TDIs are characterised by very high engine power — 240 kW — and torque of 650 Nm. By using a CSF diesel particle filter the EU 4 exhaust gas norm is satisfied. In the new engine, the cylinder gap is increased from 88 to 90 mm and the injection system converted to piezo technology. The exhaust recirculation system, combustion and turbo-charging have been further optimised. The development of the new engine is documented in two reports. The first part describes the design and mechanics, the second part the thermodynamics, application and exhaust-gas treatment.
