OBJECTIVE To know the vulnerability of the elderly to the HIV infection in the context of preventive practices. METHOD Exploratory qualitative study, lead from December 2012 to May 2013, with 37 nursing Coexistence Groups in João Pessoa--Paraiba. The Focus Group was elected as the research technique, and the empirical material obtained was subjected to a Content Analysis Technique, thematic modality. RESULTS The elderly recognize the importance of preventive practices, but they face difficulties in its use when their emotional relationships with their partners do not favor preventive behavior, resulting in vulnerability. The elderly showed the population groups most vulnerable to HIV and do not recognize themselves as such. CONCLUSION The complexity of the various contexts experienced by the elderlies of this study indicate the need for more research that allows advances in the understanding of subjectivity imposed in relations that underlie the aging process and the experience of sexuality in this age group.

Research subjects were 84 first to third year students at a university in the city of Joao Pessoa. Data was collected through a questionnaire assessing demographic, personal, family history, clinical data and lifestyle habits. The researchers applied also the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The study results revealed a predominance of healthy habits and normal clinical conditions. Nevertheless, the researchers found that 38 (33.3%) students had dizziness, 34 (40.5%) headache, 13 (15.5%) alcoholism signs, and 28 (33.3%) were under continuous medication. A total of 61 (72.6%) students had a family history of hypertension and 48 (57.1%) of diabetes. There was a statistical significance (p<0.05) between BMI and the variables: waist circumference, family history and hypertension, capillary glycaemia, and sedentary lifestyle. There was also significance between waist circumference and family history, BMI and HTN, HTN and diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and high capillary blood glucose levels. The study results revealed possible risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease amongst young nursing students. The study points out to which extent self-care is necessary in order to maintain health and a good quality of life.

Doi: 10.5902/2179769211310 Aims: to analyze the differences in the lateral range of motion of the cervical spine, among young and elderly people. Method: a quantitative and comparative study carried out in Joao Pessoa/Paraiba, with 55 elderly people and 55 young people. A flexibility test of the cervical spine was held, and the goniometer Sanny® was employed. It was considered p<0.05. Results: the elderly were 68 ± 6 years old and the young 23 ± 3 years old, and they showed 20.4 ± 6.4 degrees and 31 ± 7 degrees of right range of motion, respectively. Regarding the left side, the elderly reached 29 ± 7 degrees and the young 32 ± 6 degrees; both sides with p<0.05. Conclusions: it was observed that the participants showed lower range of motion, compared to the range established in the literature. It is necessary to develop methods that evaluate individuals in order to detect limited range of motion of the cervical spine early on.
