The study objective was to identify cardiac risks amongst nursing undergraduate degree students. It is a cross-sectional exploratory quantitative survey carried out from March to November 2012. Research subjects were 84 first to third year students at a university in the city of Joao Pessoa. Data was collected through a questionnaire assessing demographic, personal, family history, clinical data and lifestyle habits. The researchers applied also the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The study results revealed a predominance of healthy habits and normal clinical conditions. Nevertheless, the researchers found that 38 (33.3%) students had dizziness, 34 (40.5%) headache, 13 (15.5%) alcoholism signs, and 28 (33.3%) were under continuous medication. A total of 61 (72.6%) students had a family history of hypertension and 48 (57.1%) of diabetes. The research subjects’ data revealed that 12 (14.3%) had hypertension (HTN); 31 (36.9%) had an increased waist circumference, and 57 (67.9%) led an inactive lifestyle. There was a statistical significance (p<0.05) between BMI and the variables: waist circumference, family history and hypertension, capillary glycaemia, and sedentary lifestyle. There was also significance between waist circumference and family history, BMI and HTN, HTN and diabetes, sedentary lifestyle and high capillary blood glucose levels. The study results revealed possible risk factors associated with cardiovascular disease amongst young nursing students. The study points out to which extent self-care is necessary in order to maintain health and a good quality of life.

Objective: Investigate the cognitive conditions of seniors living in long-stay Institutions. Method: This is a descriptive, quantitative research, cross character, being selected 122 elderlies, long-stay institutions in the municipality of Joao Pessoa, Paraiba- Brazil. As data collection instrument was used to cognitive assessment scale Mini-Mental State examination. The data were processed with the aid of the SPSS computer package. 16.0, through descriptive statistics, presented in charts and tables for characterization and comparison of sample data and analysis of significance with the Boxplot. Results: It was observed that 67.2% (n=82) are female, aged 79 ± 10 years; 30.3% (n=37) 68 (55.7%) illiterate elderly showed cognitive deficit. It is also noted in one of the institutions, significantly lower results, with respect to the memory of Evocation. The instrument used in the study, proved effective in cognitive tracking, in addition to detect mild cognitive impairment, since the parameter that best predicts this disorder is the memory of evocation. Conclusion: The results are suggestive to use another psychometric scale, in the short term and routinely in these institutions, as a means to confirm the findings and implement measures to prevent the harms to health, considering that these deficits are capable of causing damage in the everyday life of the aged, and may interfere in the quality of life, being thus possible indications for treatment and interventions.

Participated in 21 elderly practitioners of physical activity in the city of Joao Pessoa/Paraiba, Brazil. A demographic tool, scale of fragility of Lawton and Brody and Indody 720, being the data processed by the software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 19.0, which allowed the preparation of statistical analyses with the models and techniques employed for the construction and validation of the score. Results: The elderly have an average of 6.92 ± 65.9 years of age, and 95.2% (20) female, 57.1% (12) married. As for factors evaluated: diabetes, hypertension, tachycardia, dizziness, headache, use of medication and blurred vision, no causes significant changes in the classification of the fragility of the patient. Not realize significant changes with the Mann-Whitney tests of hypotheses or the Fisher exact, the classification of Lawton did not influence the classification of the State of the patient as to the diagnosis of health and muscle strength. Conclusion: The fragility in the elderly in the study is not influenced by muscular strength and the diagnosis of health detected by Indody 720.

Were selected for the study 21 people, with inclusion criteria does not own metallic structure in the body to prevent the measure through bioimpedance equipment octopolar InBody 720 and own age less than 60 years. Results: Most of the individuals represented unfavorable health condition being more prone to cardiovascular risks. Identified that normal systolic blood pressure was the variable that most contributed to the score designed to show the possibility of a lower cardiovascular risk, while the visceral fat and fat-free mass were the factors that contributed for increased cardiovascular risk. Doi: 10.5902/2179769211310 Aims: to analyze the differences in the lateral range of motion of the cervical spine, among young and elderly people. Method: a quantitative and comparative study carried out in Joao Pessoa/Paraiba, with 55 elderly people and 55 young people. A flexibility test of the cervical spine was held, and the goniometer Sanny® was employed. It was considered p<0.05. Results: the elderly were 68 ± 6 years old and the young 23 ± 3 years old, and they showed 20.4 ± 6.4 degrees and 31 ± 7 degrees of right range of motion, respectively. Regarding the left side, the elderly reached 29 ± 7 degrees and the young 32 ± 6 degrees; both sides with p<0.05. Conclusions: it was observed that the participants showed lower range of motion, compared to the range established in the literature. It is necessary to develop methods that evaluate individuals in order to detect limited range of motion of the cervical spine early on.
