Abstract In order to compare different skin healing promoters, it was conducted a clinical, histopathological and morphometric study in swine. Six cross bred 90 days old animals from the same parturition were employed. Six experimental quadrangular wounds were made over the back region of each animal, one of them remaing as control. Five treatments were tested: Human Biofill, Veterinary Biofill, Tegaderm, Duoderm and Nitrofurazone At days 7, 14, 21, 45 and 60, biopsies for histopathological analysis were carried out. From de 7th to the 45th day, a morphometric study (perimeter and area) of the healing wounds beds was achieved. With the criteria of healing quality and adhesion to the wound the occlusive dressings in order of efficiency were: Human Biofill, Veterinary Biofill, Tegaderm and Duoderm. Nitrofurazone showed good healing qualities needing however daily changes of dressings.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effects of lips salivary gland secretion as ocular lubricant for dry eye relief in mild cases, severe and refractory to medical treatment, through the transposition technique of salivary glands autograft to the conjunctival fornix. METHODS: Seventeen dogs exhibiting autoimmune dry eye with no satisfactory response to clinical treatment were selected. Lacrimal Schirmer Test and Tear Film break-up time (BUT) preoperative tests were performed to estimate the quantity and the quality of produced tear. Animals were submitted to complete ophthalmic exams routine preoperative, each 15 days for two months and then each 30 days for more two months after surgery, totalizing six returns. Photos were taken before and after surgical procedure for photo archive. Photoshop software was utilized for corneal neovascular evaluation. RESULTS: Mucopurulent secretion, conjunctival hyperemia and blepharospasm diminished in all cases, as well as occurred stabilization of pre existent damages with important reduction of corneal neovascularization. The transposition resulted on break-up time tests improvement but no significant changes on Schirmer tests. CONCLUSION: This technique is simple, quick and effective, accessible to any veterinary ophthalmologist surgeon and is of great value for moderate and severe cases of dry keratoconjunctivitis not responsive to medications.

Pressão intra-abdominal em cães

In order to favor the homogeneity of scientific studies and to provide guidelines on the diagnosis and therapy, human basal values of the intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) and their probable thresholds in morbid cases were recently established. However, basal values and changes in the intra-abdominal pressure in animals are still partly unknown and not scientifically confirmed. Veterinarians have the need to expand their knowledge on morbid conditions that develop with Intra-Abdominal Hypertension (IAH) or Abdominal Compartment Syndrome (ACS). The present study aims to test in dogs the technique adopted in human medicine as a model for measurement of intra-abdominal pressure (1) and determine normal values for the species (2). Fifteen known mongrel healthy dogs, males and females and homogenous were tested. The measurement of IAP was done through an indirect technique which involves catheterizing the bladder and using a water column with a graduate ruler in cm of H20 - its final value converted to mm of Hg. The values observed ranged from a minimum sub atmospheric value (below of zero mm of Hg) to 3,75 mmHg. There was a considerable variation within the individual values observed in some animals, bringing up considerations related to body mass, frequency/total volume of the physiologic solution to be administered and inquietude of these dogs during the treatment. The thresholds values found are considered physiologic, indicating reliability of the technique and possibility of its clinical use. The absence of sedation and the use of urethral catheter did not compromised the measurement, however could have resulted in under- or overestimation of the values found.

LIGNEOUS CONJUNCTIVITIS IN A HORSE: A CASE OF ELEVEN MONTHS DURATION

Antônio Felipe Paulino de Figueiredo Wouk; Silvana Maris Cirio; R. Garotti; G. G. Kasecker; A. L. Souza

A six months old throughbred female race horse was received presenting events of mucous purulent discharge from the right eye for two days. Close examination of both eyes revealed bilateral mucous purulent conjunctivitis, more severe on the left eye where discharge was more profuse, with tarsal and bulbar chemosis and blepharospasm. This animal also had a fluoresceine fixing superficial linear ulcer on the left eye. It was performed culture of material from the botton of conjunctive sack, which revealed an infection by Pseudomonas spp, sensitive to tobramycine. Based upon microbiological tests, tobramycine eye drops (15 mg/ml) and ophtalmic ointment (15 mg/g) was given for three weeks, and a two percent atropine and one percent dichorphenac eye drops were given for five days. At the end of the treatment, the right eye was calm and without alterations while the left eye displayed a tarsal membranous conjunctivitis with minimal serous ocular discharge. The presence of an allergic conjunctivitis was suspected and four percent dissodium chromoglicate eye drops were given. In spite of the decrease of inflamation observed, the conjunctive membranes remained. Surgical debridement of the membranes was performed and representative material was collected and sent for histological examination. Based upon human and canine reports and histological findings, the most probable diagnosis was ligneous conjunctivitis. After biopsy, the drug chromoglicate was replaced by one percent prednisolone eye drops for three weeks. After this, the eye showed a discreet dorsal tarsal chemosis and hyperemia but no membranous conjunctivitis. As supporting therapy a daily morning instillation of corticoid for 30 days was ordered. Five months later, a recurrence of the membranous conjunctivitis was verified and these membranes invaded the cornea, causing temporal pigmentary keratitis. A two percent cyclosporine ointment was then given and a new biopsy asked. The diagnosis of recurrent severe ligneous conjunctivitis was evident, and a wide surgical resection of the membranes and vascular cauterization was decided. Postoperative treatment was composed by one percent prednisolone, one and a half percent tobramicine eye drops together with 5,000 IU /ml heparin. Treatment proceeded for 30 days when the antibiotic was taken off, corticoid frequency was reduced and topic heparin kept. Ligneous conjunctivitis is a chronic membranous conjunctivitis with presence of membranes mainly in the tarsal superior conjunctives, of ignored etiology. Up to the present, two months after the surgical resection of the membranes, the topical use of corticoid and heparin satisfactorily controls the case, now eleven months old.
