Mixed Convection Boundary Layer Flow towards a Vertical Plate with a Convective Surface Boundary Condition

Fazlina Aman; Anuar Ishak

The steady mixed convection flow towards an impermeable vertical plate with a convective surface boundary condition is investigated. The governing partial differential equations are first reduced to ordinary differential equations using a similarity transformation, before being solved numerically. The features of the flow and heat transfer characteristics for different values of the governing parameters are analyzed and discussed. Both assisting and opposing flows are considered. The results indicate that dual solutions exist for the opposing flow, whereas for the assisting flow, the solution is unique. Moreover, increasing the convective parameter is to increase the skin friction coefficient and the heat transfer rate at the surface.

Sensitivity Analysis on Thermal Conductivity Characteristics of a Water-Based Bionanofluid Flow Past a Wedge Surface

Sze Qi Chan; Fazlina Aman; Syahira Mansur

Thermobioconvection boundary layer flow in a suspension of water-based bionanofluid holding both nanoparticles and motile microorganisms past a wedge surface was studied. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations on reference of the Buongiorno model were transformed into a set of coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations. Shooting technique was then used to solve the transformed nonlinear ordinary differential equations numerically. The solutions were found to be contingent on several values of the governing parameters. As highlighted, the velocity profile as well as the skin friction coefficient was affected by the pressure gradient parameter, the function of the wedge angle parameter. On the other hand, the temperature, nanoparticle concentration, and density of motile microorganism’s distributions together with its corresponding local Nusselt number, local Sherwood number, and local density of the motile microorganisms change with the thermophoresis and Brownian motion parameter and so Lewis number, Schmidt number, and bioconvection Peclet number. An experimental scheme together with sensitivity analysis on the basis of Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was applied to examine the dependency of the response parameters of interest to the input parameters’ change. Obviously, local Nusselt number was more sensitive towards the Brownian motion parameter when the Brownian motion parameter was at 0.2 and 0.3. However local Sherwood number was more sensitive towards the Lewis number for all values of Brownian motion parameter. Compatibility found by comparing results between RSM and shooting technique gave confidence for the model’s accuracy. The findings would provide initial guidelines for future device fabrication. Finally, the numerical results obtained were thoroughly inspected and verified with the existing values reported by some researchers.

Parameter estimation of Monod model by the Least-Squares method for microalgae Botryococcus Braunii sp

J J See; Siti Suhana Jamaian; Rohayu Mohd Salleh; Maria Elena Nor; Fazlina Aman

This research aims to estimate the parameters of Monod model of microalgae Botryococcus Braunii sp growth by the Least-Squares method. Monod equation is a non-linear equation which can be transformed into a linear equation form and it is solved by implementing the Least-Squares linear regression method. Meanwhile, Gauss-Newton method is an alternative method to solve the non-linear Least-Squares problem with the aim to obtain the parameters value of Monod model by minimizing the sum of square error ( SSE). As the result, the parameters of the Monod model for microalgae Botryococcus Braunii sp can be estimated by the Least-Squares method. However, the estimated parameters value obtained by the non-linear Least-Squares method are more accurate compared to the linear Least-Squares method since the SSE of the non-linear Least-Squares method is less than the linear Least-Squares method.

The unsteady hydromagnetic flow adjacent to a stretching vertical sheet is studied. The unsteadiness in the flow and temperature fields is caused by the time dependence of the stretching velocity and the surface heat flux. The governing partial differential equations are reduced to nonlinear ordinary differential equations, before being solved numerically. Comparison with previously published results as well as the exact solution for the steady-state case of the present problem is made, and the results are found to be in good agreement. Effects of the unsteadiness parameter, magnetic parameter, and Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer are fully examined.

Stagnation point flow on bioconvection nanofluid over a stretching/shrinking surface with velocity and thermal slip effects

Sze Qi Chan; Fazlina Aman; Syahira Mansur

Nanofluid containing nanometer sized particles has become an ideal thermal conductivity medium for the flow and heat transfer in many industrial and engineering applications due to their high rate of heat transfer. However, swimming microorganisms are imposed into the nanofluid to overcome the instability of nanoparticles due to a bioconvection phenomenon. This paper investigates the stagnation point flow on bioconvection heat transfer of a nanofluid over a stretching/shrinking surface containing gyrotactic microorganisms. Velocity and thermal slip effects are the two conditions incorporated into the model. Similarity transformation is applied to reduce the governing nonlinear partial differential equations into the nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The transformed equations are then solved numerically. The results are displayed in the form of graphs and tables. The effects of these governing parameters on the skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number, local Sherwood number and the local density of the motile microorganisms are analysed and discussed in details.

Mixed convection flow of a nanofluid containing gyrotactic microorganisms over a stretching/shrinking sheet in the presence of magnetic field

Fazlina Aman; Wan Nor Hafizah Wan Mohamad Khazim; Syahira Mansur

Interaction of motile microorganisms and nanoparticles along with buoyancy forces will produce nanofluid bioconvection. Bioconvection happened because of the microorganisms are imposed into the nanofluid to stabilize the nanoparticles to suspend. In this paper, we investigated the problem of mixed convection flow of a nanofluid combined with gyrotactic microorganisms over a stretching/shrinking sheet under the influence of magnetic field. The nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed into a set of five similarities nonlinear ordinary differential equations by using similarity transformation, before being solved numerically. Some of the governing parameters involve in this problem are magnetic parameter, stretching/shrinking parameter, Brownian motion parameter, thermophoresis parameter and Prandtl number. Using tables and graphs, the consequences of numerous parameters on the flow and heat transfer features are examined and discussed. The results indicate that the skin friction coefficient, local Nusselt number, local Sherwood number and local density of the motile microorganisms are strongly affected by the governing parameters.

Norhaliza Abu Bakar; Fazlina Aman; Mahathir Mohamad; Rozaini Roslan

The problem of natural convection fluid flow and heat transfer of TiO2-water nanofluid inside of two differentially-heated square ducts is analysed numerically by finite difference method. The outer duct is maintained at a constant temperature Tc, while the inner duct is kept at higher constant temperature Th. The effect of the Rayleigh number, Ra and the nanoparticle volume fraction, φ on the heat transfer and Nusselt number, Nu are investigated and compared to previous study.
