Week-to-Week Leisure Trip Frequency and Its Variability

Ari K.M. Tarigan; Ryuichi Kitamura

Using a 6-week travel diary survey from Germany, this study examined the effect of the frequency of leisure trips per week on the variability in the number of such trips over weeks. The frequency of trips and the variability were measured for six activity types: social contact, sports, recreation, culture and learning, nature, and shopping. A two-stage model, consisting of tobit and ordinary least-squares approaches, was used with dependent variables of trip frequency per week and variability of trips over weeks, respectively. The results showed that the frequency of leisure trips influenced their variability in certain activity types. The effects vary substantially across activity types.

Intrapersonal Variability in Leisure Activity-Travel Patterns: the Case of One-Worker and Two-Worker Households

Ari K.M. Tarigan; Satoshi Fujii; Ryuichi Kitamura

Abstract Using multi-week travel diary data from Germany, this study examines intrapersonal variability in leisure activity-travel behavior. In particular, it investigates whether individuals from one-worker households have greater intrapersonal variability in leisure activity-travel patterns than those from two-worker households. The paper examines differences in intrapersonal variability behaviors concerning trip frequency, activity duration, travel time and travel distance by comparing females from one-worker households and females from two-worker households in the context of leisure travel and activity. Similar analyses were also conducted for males. The results of analysis suggest that intrapersonal variability in leisure activity-travel patterns varies across individuals and households. The results further confirm the hypothesis that individuals from one-worker households had greater intrapersonal variability for several behavioral patterns than those from two-worker households. Social characteristics, auto ownership and location were found to statistically affect intrapersonal variability in leisure activities and travels.

The role of incentives towards adolescents’ commitment to use public transport in Malaysia

Nur Sabahiah Abdul Sukor; Nur Khairiyah Basri; Ari K.M. Tarigan

ABSTRACT This study examines the adoption of a travel behaviour modification programme to encourage sustainable mobility and public bus usage. Students from four schools in Penang Island were recruited and divided into two groups: Group 1 (without incentives) and Group 2 (with incentives). In the experiment, after having a motivation session about sustainable transport, the respondents were asked to design their travel patterns for seven days. The next session gathered data about their actual travel and asked for feedback regarding the programme. The results demonstrate that incentives encouraged respondents to follow their plans for travel behaviour and public bus usage. The results highlight that their commitment to follow their travel plans were influenced by ethnicity, distance from home to school, travel time, and household income. The study offers some discussion regarding the implications of the results for strengthening sustainable mobility and encouraging public bus use among adolescents.

The pursuit of greenness: explaining low-carbon urban transformation in Indonesia

Ari K.M. Tarigan; Saut Sagala

ABSTRACT Despite the limited efforts of Indonesian cities and urban areas to overcome high production of greenhouse gas emissions, Balikpapan and Palembang are two cities that have demonstrated intriguing efforts to reduce such emissions. This paper aims to add to the scientific literature regarding the recent progress of low-carbon transformation in developing countries. The paper identifies the drivers of low-carbon planning and development and the extent to which such drivers can influence the success of low-carbon agendas. Four perspectives of analysis are adopted and tested using Balikpapan and Palembang as study cases: (1) public policy, (2) collaboration, (3) infrastructure and (4) knowledge creation and utilization. This study offers critical discussion regarding the adoption of the four perspectives as an integrated analysis to explain the complexity of low-carbon urban transformation.
