BackgroundThe aim of this study was to determine the bacterial species recovered from 61 cats with lower urinary tract infection (LUTI), and their susceptibility to cefovecin in vitro.ResultsThe clinical signs and final clinical diagnosis for cats with confirmed LUTI were also reported. After physical examination of the cats, urine samples including ≥5-6 leucocytes in microscopic evaluation were cultured using bacteriological techniques. The isolates were identified by conventional microbiological methods and tested for in vitro susceptibility using the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method recommended by the Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute. Bacterial growth was observed in 16 of 61 urine samples. Antimicrobial susceptibility tests showed that 13 of 16 (81%) isolates were susceptible to cefovecin. The most frequently isolated bacterium from cats with signs of lower urinary tract infection, was Escherichia coli.ConclusionCefovecin was found to be effective in cats with LUTI. Because cefovecin is a new antimicrobial agent in veterinary medicine, there are only few studies about urine culture of cats with LUTI. It is the first study on in vitro activity of cefovecin against bacterial isolates from cats with lower urinary infections in Istanbul, Turkey.

Objective: The aim of this study was, to examine the presence of Aeromonas salmonicida in lake water and fish species living in Lake Sazlıdere, a region where fish hunting was also conducted, in Istanbul. Material and Methods: In this study, between April 2014 and March 2015, samples from Lake Sazlıdere were collected for once a month. Samples were divided into three groups including, swabs materials from fish surface (n=48), viscera (n=46) and lake water (n=60). The samples inoculated on to the Furunculosis Agar and Tryptic Soy Agar including Coomassie Brilliant Blue (C-TSA) and incubated at 25°C for 7 days. Presumptive colonies were examined with biochemical tests for the identification of A. salmonicida. Concurrently with bacteriological examination, all of the samples were examined for the presence of vapA gene with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Results: According to bacteriological examination results, A. salmonicida were not isolated from any of the samples. As a result of PCR, of 60 water samples 3 (5.0%) were positive for vapA gene, while A. salmonicida specific DNA was not detected in the viscere and swab samples. Conclusion: It has been determined that infections caused by A. salmonicida, especially furunculosis disease, under this light do not constitute a risk in Lake Sazlıdere at the time of the study. However, the information obtained from fishermen and the results of PCR, when evaluated together with chemical contamination in general, indicate that continual investigations should be continued in this area, not within a certain period of time.

The aim of the study is to detect the presence of the Salmonella species in swine with diarrhea, and to investigate their antimicrobial resistance and extended spectrum beta lactamase (ESBL) and/or AmpC β-lactamase production. For this purpose, stool samples from three commercial pig farms in Istanbul and Tekirdag were collected and processed for Salmonella isolation by culture and isolates were identified by biochemical activity tests. Salmonella isolates were confirmed by PCR then serotyped. Antimicrobial resistance and ESBL and AmpC production of the isolates were determined according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) standard. In the study, two hundred and thirty eight stool samples were examined. Salmonella spp. were obtained from 2 samples, and the isolation rate was determined as 0.8%. Both of the isolates were defined as Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium (serotype 1, 4, [5], 12: I: 1, 2) by serotyping. Both of them were resistant to cefaclor, cloxacillin and lincomycin (100%). Multidrug resistance (resistance ≥3 antimicrobials) observed in all isolates. ESBL and AmpC production were not detected in any of the isolates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the isolation of S. Typhimurium in pigs with diarrhea in Turkey. This study also represents the first report of multi-drug resistant S. Typhimurium isolates from pig stools in Turkey.

ARE 18 kedi ve 18 kopek orneginden izole edildi. Butun izolatlarda coklu-antibiyotik direnci (direnc ≥4 antimikrobiyal) saptandi. Virulens genleri ace, agg ve esp test edilen hicbir izolatta saptanmadi. efaA ve gelE genlerinin saptanma oranlari sirasiyla %13,8 ve %11,1 di. Pet hayvanlarinda ARE izolasyon orani %22,9 olarak saptandi. Evcil hayvanlar arasinda antimikrobiyal direncli Enterokoklarin taranmasi halk sagligi ile iliskilidir. Ayrica hayvan ve insanlarda antimikrobiyal direnc sorununu tespit etmek ve zamaninda onlem alabilmek konusunda yapilan calismanin aydinlatici olabilecegi dusunulmektedir.
