BackgroundFlorid cemento-osseous dysplasia (FCOD) has been described as a condition that characteristically affects the jaws of middle-aged black women. Radiographically, FCOD appears as dense, lobulated masses, often symmetrically located in various regions of the jaws. FCOD is usually asymptomatic. In severe cases, focal expansion may occur due to infection. Management of the symptomatic patient is more difficult due to the avascular nature of the lesion which contributes to susceptibility severe infection, bone sequestration, and osteomyelitis when surgery is performed.Case reportThis paper presents a rare case of severe FCOD; the black woman patient was diagnosed based on clinical and radiographic findings and treated conservatively. The examination of panoramic radiographs revealed a multiple sclerotic masses with radiolucent borders, found in the mandible and maxilla which were symmetrical at presentation. The patient continuous with the follow-up.DiscussionThis report confirms that a diagnosis can be made with accurate clinical and radiographic assessment. The correct selection of treatment for FCOD depends on this information.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of FoxP3+ cells in oral lichen planus (OLP) and to correlate the findings with clinical and histopathological features of these lesions. The sample consisted of 32 cases of OLP (17 reticular and 15 erosive cases) and 10 cases of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH). Clinical examination, histopathological and histomorphometric analysis, and immunohistochemistry (anti‐FoxP3 antibody) were performed. Cells were counted in juxtaepithelial and intraepithelial regions of the lesions, and the results are expressed as the mean and range. Most erosive lesions were keratinized and exhibited epithelial atrophy, whereas most reticular lesions were hyperkeratinized. Mean epithelial thickness and mean density of the inflammatory infiltrate were higher in reticular lesions than in erosive OLP. Juxtaepithelial FoxP3+ cells were slightly more frequent in erosive lesions (mean: 1.7 and range: 0–9.4) than in reticular lesions (mean: 1.5 and range: 0–8.3). There was a significant difference in the frequency of these cells between OLP (mean: 1.6 and range: 0–9.4) and IFH (mean: 0.5 and range: 0–1.4) (P < 0.05). The number of intraepithelial FoxP3+ cells was higher in reticular OLP and IFH when compared with erosive lesions. The larger number of juxtaepithelial FoxP3+ cells in OLP compared to IFH might be related to the distinct etiopathogenesis of these lesions. High disease activity or action of the oral microbiota may explain the slightly higher frequency of FoxP3+ cells in erosive lesions.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the expression of hMLH1, p63, and MDM2 in Gorlin syndrome-associated keratocystic odontogenic tumors (SKOTs) and nonsyndromic keratocystic odontogenic tumors (NSKOTs). STUDY DESIGN Seventeen primary NSKOTs, 17 SKOTs, and 8 recurrent NSKOTs were analyzed by using immunohistochemistry. RESULTS No significant differences in the hMLH1, p63, or MDM2 labeling indices were observed between groups (P = .398; P = .232; P = .426, respectively). Higher hMLH1 immunoexpression was found in the basal layer of primary NSKOTs. Most KOTs exhibited p63 immunoexpression in the upper layers of the epithelium. MDM2 immunoexpression was observed in the upper epithelial layers of SKOTs and recurrent NSKOTs. CONCLUSION It was not possible to correlate the immunoexpression of hMLH1, p63, and MDM2 in SKOTs and primary and recurrent NSKOTs, suggesting that these proteins exert independent effects on the development of these groups of tumors.

Introduction Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is one of the most frequent malignant salivary gland tumors, which commonly affects the minor salivary glands of the mouth and is rare in the nose and paranasal sinuses. In the maxillary sinus, ACC can mimic inflammatory diseases and has a poor prognosis. Objective To report a case of a 50-year-old man with ACC of the maxillary sinus whose clinical findings in the alveolar ridge mimicked an oroantral fistula. Case Report An excisional biopsy was performed and histopathologic analysis revealed ACC. Lung metastases and residual tumor in the maxillary sinus were detected by imaging methods. In view of the poor general health of the patient, no new surgical intervention was performed and he was only treated by radiotherapy and follow-up. Conclusion Although rare in the maxillary sinus, ACC should be included in the differential diagnosis of lesions affecting this site.

The aim of this article is to report the case of a 23-year-old female patient that sought dental service for examination of an asymptomatic slow-growing large lump in the mandibular gingiva causing displacement of the right first molar. Excisional biopsy, histopathological analysis, Alcian blue/periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining and immunohistochemistry analysis for S-100 were performed. The diagnosis established was oral focal mucinosis. After three years, the patient is still under follow-up, without any recurrences. Although cases of oral focal mucinosis of this particular size are rare, this entity should be considered in the differential diagnosis of oral lesions located in the gingiva.
