We evaluated the effect of replacing corn with crude glycerin in diets for finishing pigs. We used 80 pigs, steers, commercial hybrids, with an average weight of 67kg, in an experiment with a completely randomized design with five treatments and eight replicates of two animals per experimental unit. The treatments were 0.0, 4.0, 8.0, 12.0, and 16.0% crude glycerin as a replacement for maize in diets. The substitution of corn with crude glycerin did not affect performance characteristics (P>0.05). We observed an increasing linear effect of the treatment (P<0.05) on backfat thickness and decreasing linear effect of the treatment (P<0.05) on the loss of fluid in the thawing and shearing force. The crude glycerin can replace up to 16.0% of the corn diet for finishing pigs without loss of performance and carcass yield, with improvements in meat quality.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary methionine + cystine levels on performance, carcass characteristics and immune response of weanling pigs. It was used 360 piglets, 180 males and 180 females, weaned at 20.3 days of age and initial weight of 5.43 ± 1.17kg. Was used the experimental design of randomized blocks in a 5x2 factorial design, with five levels of total methionine + cystine (0.70; 0.77; 0.85; 0.93 e 1.01%) and two forms of immune system activation (vaccinated and unvaccinated), with four replications and nine animals per experimental unit. There was no interaction between the methionine + cystine levels and the degree of activation of the immune system of animals for all parameters evaluated. The immune system activation decreased by 7% feed intake and 5% in daily weight gain of the animals. Methionine and cystine levels linearly improved feed conversion and daily protein deposition on the carcass as the level of sulfur amino acids in the diets increased. Pigs from six to 16 kg, independent of immune system activation, require 0.90% of total methionine + cystine, which corresponds to a daily intake of methionine + cystine 4.44 g/day and a ratio of 58% methionine + cystine: lysine.

In order to evaluate the effects of spray-dried plasma on performance (weight gain, feed intake, and feed conversion), growth, intestinal health (microflora colonization and intestinal wall morphology) of piglets fed equal amounts per day of feed, 24 piglets weaned at 28 days old were used in an experiment performed as a randomised block design with four treatments (diets with 0.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5% inclusion of spray-dried plasma), six replicates and one animal per experimental unit. Significant differences were observed among treatments weight gain, feed conversion and numbers of E. coli colony forming-units (CFU). Pigletsfed diets with different levels of spray-dried plasma had higher weight gain, better feed conversion and lower amounts of E. coli CFU in the small intestine than animals fed diets without spray-dried plasma in the diets. No significant effect of the treatments on the intestinal wall morphology at day twelve after weaning was observed. In conclusion, the inclusion of 2.5% spray-dried plasma in the diets in creases weight gain, improves feed conversion and reduces the incidence of E. coli CFU in the small intestine of piglets weaned at 28 days of age reared under challenging conditions, however, no beneficial effect on the intestinal wall morphology was observed with the inclusion of spray dried plasma in the diets.
