Occlusal contact changes after the active phase of orthodontic treatment

Occlusal contacts in maximum intercuspidation were recorded at the end of active orthodontic treatment and 3 months into the retention period. Hawley retainer, tooth positioner, and nontreated normal occlusion groups of 10 subjects were examined for change in the number and location of occlusal contacts. Soft silicone-base impression materials were used to make interocclusal registrations. The contacts were then transferred onto the study models, and standard photographs of each model were taken. To determine any locational changes, superimposition of the first registration photograph on the second one was done. Significant difference in the number of total contacts between the treated groups and the control sample was recorded at both time periods. Use of a tooth positioner as a retainer did not show any additional gain of contacts in the positioner group when compared with the Hawley retainer group. No significant change in the location of contacts occurred during the period of observation.

Effects of retainers on the articulation of speech

Articulation abilities of 15 patients were evaluated at the end of orthodontic treatment with the initiation of removable upper and lower retainer wear. A test of articulation, based on consonants and vowels (cv), (vcv), (vc), (cvc) nonsense syllables, was used to evaluate the articulatory distortions with no retainers and with maxillary and mandibular retainers worn respectively and together. The test was performed (a) on the first day, (b) 24 hours later, and (c) 1 week later. Statistically significant articulatory distortions with the /t/ and /d/ sounds on the first day with upper retainer only and with both retainers worn together were noted. Also significant distortion of the /k/ sound with both retainers worn was observed. These distortions, due to the wearing of retainers, decreased to an insignificant level or disappeared completely on the seventh day showing the ability of tongue adaptation in a very short period of time.

GENÇ ERİŞKİNLERİN SEFALOMETRİK İSKELETSEL ÖLÇÜMLERİNDE 3 YILLIK LONGİTÜDİNAL DEĞİŞİKLİKLER

OZET: Kronolojik yaslari 18.96±1.32 yil olan genc eriskinlerin yuz iskelet yapilarindaki degisikligi incelemek amaciyla 26 kiz 24 erkek toplam 50 bireyin dogal bas pozisyonunda lateral sefalometrik filmleri alinarak 17 acisal ve 6 lineer olcum yapilmistir. Ayni olcumler 3 yil sonra tekrarlanarak ortalamalar arasindaki fark iki es arasindaki farkin onemlilik testi ile karsilastinlmistir. Sonuc olarak, genc eriskin erkeklerde arka kafa kaidesi yuksekliginde artis ve ANB acisinda azalma bulunmustur. Kizlarda ise alt ve ust keserler labiale dogru egilmis ve keserler arasi, SNA, SNB ve gonial acilarda azalma oldugu saptanmistir.

GENÇ ERİŞKİNLERDE YUMUŞAK DOKU FASİYAL PROFİL ÖZELLİKLERİNİN LONGİTUDİNAL OLARAK İNCELENMESİ

OZET: Genc Turk eriskinlerde, yumusak doku profil ozelliklerinde zaman icinde meydana gelen degisikliklerin incelenmesi amaciyla, kronolojik yas ortalamalari 18.96± 1.32 yil olan daha once ortodontik tedavi gormemis 26 kiz, 24 erkek toplam 50 birey incelenmistir. Dogal bas konumunda alinan sefalometrik filmler uzerinde 9 acisal 17 lineer olcum yapilmis ve ayni olcumler 3 yil sonra tekrarlanarak iki es arasindaki farkin onemlilik testi ile karsilastirilmistir. Sonuc olarak bayanlarda ve erkeklerde yumusak doku profilinin farkli bolgelerinde degisiklikler olusmaktadir. Bayanlarda ust burun yuksekligi ve burun tabani egimi artmakta, yumusak doku cene ucu kalinligi azalmaktadir. Erkeklerde ise mandibulanin B noktasinin sagital derinligi, cene ucunun sagital derinligi, ust dudagin estetik duzleme olan uzakligi, iskelet profil konveksitesi ve nazolabial kalinlik artmakta, ANB acisi azalmaktadir.

İki Borderline Olguda Rapid Maksiller Ekspansiyon

OZET: Mandibulada caprasikligin minimal oldugu, maksillada ise unilateral veya bilateral capraz kapanis ve maksiller dis-ark boyu uyumsuzlugu olan ve dengeli bir profile sahip olgularda ozellikle profili olumsuz yonde etkilememek icin dis cekiminden kacinilir. Bu olgularda rapid maksiller ekspansiyon etkin bir tedavi secenegidir. Bu makalede yukarida sayilan ozelliklere sahip iki olgumuzun tedavileri sunulacaktir.

İSKELETSEL SINIF III MALOKLUZYONLU İKİ OLGUDA ORTOGNATİK CERRAHİ ÖNCESİ ÇEKİMLİ TEDAVİ UYGULANMASI

OZET: Iskeletsel Sinif III malokluzyon gosteren iki olguda ortognatik cerrahi oncesi cekimli ortodontik tedavinin uygun olarak planlanmasi ile elde edilen sonuclar sergilenmistir.

Sabit Ortodontik Tedavi Bitiminde Positioner Apareyi Kullanımı

OZET: Aktif sabit ortodontik tedavi bitiminde elde edilen durumun korunabilmesi amaciyla geleneksel olarak pasif pekistirme apareyleri kullanilmaktadir. Positioner apareyi ise, sabit ortodontik tedavi bitiminden sonra dislerin daha ideal konumlarina dogru yerlesmeye devam etmelerini saglayan aktif bir apareydir. Yazimizda bu apareyin sabit tedavi bitiminden sonra aktif yonlendirme ve pekistirme amaciyla kullanimina deginilmistir.
