Sammo Cho; Gwangsoon Lee; Byungjun Bae; Kyu-Tae Yang; Chung-Hyun Ahn; Soo-In Lee; Chieteuk Ahn

Commercial terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) service was launched on December 1st, 2005, in the Seoul metropolitan area of the Republic of Korea. As the worlds first commercial terrestrial mobile multimedia broadcasting service, T-DMB garnered huge attention in the field of mobile broadcasting. This paper presents the history, system, and services of T-DMB

Byungjun Bae; Young Ho Jeong; Young Kwon Hahm; Soo In Lee; Kyu-Ik Sohng

We show the framework of the Korean terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) standard and propose the architecture of a new T-DMB system for mobile multimedia broadcasting services. We also designed and implemented a new device called the ensemble remultiplexer to verify the proposed T-DMB transmission system.

In this paper, we present the architecture of the interactive terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) system using the code division multiple access (CDMA) network for the new interactive broadcasting services. We also propose the novel structure of the novel platform based on wireless Internet platform for interoperability (WIPI), which is the standard specifications for the mobile platform in Korea, to co-operate broadcasting and telecommunication. The proposed extended WIPI platform is implemented as an emulator on PC, and an integrated browser which shows multimedia broadcasting data including AV contents and interactive data returned through the telecommunication network, is developed to carry on with it. And then to verify the proposed platform and the interactive mobile broadcasting services, we implemented the integrated receiver as well as the data broadcasting server and the return channel server. Users can get interactive services or more information about broadcasting contents through CDMA network by using the proposed platform. This shows a possibility of new interactive services in digital broadcasting by using mobility of T-DMB and CDMA

In this paper, we present the configuration diagram of the interactive Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) system using the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) telecommunication network for the interactive broadcasting services. The system consists of a T-DMB transmission system, an interactive receiver with a CDMA module, and a return channel server. We also describe the protocol stack for providing data broadcasting service in T-DMB and propose a variety of interactive broadcasting service based on it. In order to verify the proposed service, we design and implement an interactive T-DMB receiver with a CDMA module. And also a return channel server is operated to test it, which includes the interactive contents produced in advance, responding users request. Under the constructed test environment, the proposed service and the newly designed receiver were verified. This means that new interactive services in digital broadcasting are possible on the move by using mobility of T-DMB and CDMA.1

Design and Implementation of DMBonIP Gateway to Provide Internet Based DMB Service

Jong-Deok Kim; Hyocheol Jang; Byungjun Bae; Chung-Hyun Ahn

This paper introduces a novel approach for extending DMB service area by making use of existing IP networks. DMBonIP Gateway, which provides RTP/SDP based Internet streaming service by generating media streams in real time from the DMB ensemble received from the air, is introduced for this purpose. This paper addresses key functional components of DMBonIP gateway and how they are designed and implemented.

Disparity-compensated coding using MAC for stereoscopic video

Suk-Hee Cho; Kug-Jin Yun; Byungjun Bae; Youngkow Hahm

We propose a novel disparity-compensated coding algorithm using MAC (multiple auxiliary component) of MPEG-4 for stereoscopic video. MAC was added to the MPEG-4 visual version 2 in order to describe the transparency of the video object. The major difference between the existing coding method and the proposed coding method is the addition of the residual texture coding. The proposed coding method assigns disparity map and residual texture to 3 components of MAC: one component for disparity map and the remaining 2 components for the luminance and chrominance data of the residual texture, respectively.

Hybrid DMB services based on mobile broadcast/communication converged networks

Byungjun Bae; Joungil Yun; Hyung-Kou Cho; Yun-Jeong Song; Namho Hur

As several current and emerging broadcasting services are evolved to integrate with internet contents, Terrestrial Digital Multimedia Broadcast (T-DMB), or DMB also is required to combine with mobile contents provided through wireless communication networks. The paper proposes new concept of the converged service based on the DMB and wireless communication networks. After developing various kinds of servers and a hybrid DMB App, we verify the proposed hybrid DMB service in the real mobile environment. From a result, we present the feasibility of the proposed service as a commercialized service.

This paper proposes a 3D representation method that can be used in web platform based hybrid 3DTV. In order to provide declarative content for stereoscopic TV service, we studied content separation and 3D representation techniques, including 3D positioning. As the result of this study, we have designed and implemented a 3D view volume for three dimensional spatial layout and stereoscopic rendering of each element by extending CSS. To verify the suggested method, we generated sample content and it demonstrated that the proposed method enables 2D-based content to be reused in 3D content. Moreover, this approach can be easily adopted for web platform-based content creation.

Converged architecture for broadcast and multicast services in heterogeneous network

Deokhui Lee; Woosuk Kim; Byungjun Bae; Hyoungsoo Lim; Jaewoo So

This paper proposes a converged architecture for broadcast and multicast services in a heterogeneous network. To support the broadcast/multicast services in the long-term evolution (LTE) network, the standard enhances multimedia broadcast multicast service (MBMS). In the broadcast network, digital video broadcasting for handhelds (DVB-H) is the standard for broadcasting IP data services to user equipment (UE). Accordingly, the converged LTE and DVB-H network can be used to service the broadcast/multicast services. To employ the converged network, additional entities are required for the contents management, electronic service guide (ESG) management and resource management. Therefore, we propose several logical entities to fulfill functionality from the above mentioned issues. The proposed logical entities are as follows: an integrated contents server, an integrated ESG server and an integrated management server. We also present several scenarios for implementing the converged architecture and compare the advantage of each scenario. Service providers can exploit the converged architecture according to preference and equipped devices. This study is of particular interest to the service providers because it provides the service providers with an insight of the various scenarios to make the converged architecture for broadcast/multicast service.

Byungjun Bae; Woosuk Kim; Choonhyun Ahn; Soo In Lee; Kyu-Ik Sohng

In this paper, we present the architecture of the interactive T-DMB system using the CDMA network for the new interactive broadcasting services. We also propose the structure of the new platform based on WIPI to link broadcasting and telecommunication. We verify the proposed platform with various interactive data contents after implementing it. This shows the possibilities of new interactive services in the digital broadcasting by utilizing the mobility of T-DMB and CDMA
