Os valores declarados da antropometria mostram boas perspectivas de uso em outras analises envolvendo determinantes de saude e nutricao.OBJECTIVE To analyze the consistency between height and weight values obtained by direct measurement and reporting in contemporary national surveys. METHODS A group of 20 to 39 year olds were selected in the Household Budget Survey (POF) and Surveillance System Risk and Protective Factors for Chronic Diseases Survey Telephone (VIGITEL), 2008 and 2009. The surveys were matched by sex and age. For inference about the comparison between standardized (POF) and self-declared (VIGITEL) height and weight values used the Student t test and the Spearman estimator (ρ). The consistency between anthropometric indexes and indicators in the two surveys was estimated by the estimators of Lin (Φ) and Pearson (r). RESULTS Weight and height results were higher than those measured in a standardized way. The correlation of average height in the two surveys was ρ = 0.31 in women and ρ = 0.62 in men. The association was ρ = 0.86 and 0.88 respectively, for weight. Body mass index showed a strong correlation and agreement of approximately 0.90 for the two estimators in both sexes. The agreement between the diagnosis of obesity from the values of the measured and self-declared surveys was Φ = 0.89 in men and Φ = 0.91 in women. CONCLUSIONS Reported height and weight follow the same bias as those measured standardly and eliminates distortion in estimated indices and indicators in both surveys. The declared anthropometric values show good prospects for use in other analyses involving determinants of health and nutrition.

Dietary patterns are a subject of growing interest considering the complex nature of dietary intake and its relationship with health outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between changes in adolescents’ BMI and their dietary trend pattern. This study is a follow-up of the children in the study titled “Dietary Intake and Physical Activity as Determinants of Changes in Body Mass Index in a Cohort of Adolescents Enrolled in Public Schools in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo,” and was conducted in public schools in Piracicaba, Sao Paulo, Brazil, with 372 adolescents participating in wave I (2004) and 268 participating in wave II (2005). Dietary intake was assessed using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ), and height and weight measurements were also collected. The authors identified dietary patterns using principal component analysis. To describe dietary trends, they decided to match patterns across waves. Dietary patterns were gathered from 12 food groups. Relative risk was calculated by dividing the incidence of overweight among boys and girls across quintiles of dietary pattern scores. Matching C1 wave I and C1 wave II shows a multigroup trend pattern based on consumption of high levels of fruit, cereals, fatty foods, meat/eggs, milk, and vegetable groups. The relative risk for overweight was significantly lower for boys between the quintiles of this pattern (P < .05). The main results indicate that sustaining a healthy eating pattern for adolescents living without any nutritional intervention is of primary importance in maintaining or reducing BMI at this age.

Associations between dietary patterns (DP) and socioeconomic factors have been little explored in adolescents. The aim of this study was to identify DP in European and Brazilian adolescents and to investigate their associations with a range of socioeconomic indicators. Adolescents from the HELENA-study and the Household Budget Survey were analyzed. Factor analysis was used to obtain DP. Linear regression was used to examine the association between DP and SES. In Europeans, the Western DP was associated with low education of the mother, high socioeconomic status (boys), older age (boys), and living in cities of the Northern Europe; in Brazilians, the Western DP was associated with high secondary education of the mother, high socioeconomic status and living in Southern areas of the country. The Traditional European DP, in both genders, was associated with high secondary education of the mother and inversely associated with a high socioeconomic status; the Traditional Brazilian DP, was associated with university level education of the mother and older age (boys). The association between DP and socioeconomic factors is relevant for the understanding of food-related practices and highlight the importance of performing a complete assessment of the socioeconomic influence in adolescent’s DP from developed and developing countries.
