Follicle-stimulating hormone prepared from human pituitaries (human pituitary FSH) has been shown to produce polycystic ovaries, endometrial changes and a great increase in the urinary excretion of estrogens in young amenorrhceic women (Gemze l l , D i c z f a l u s y , and T i l l i n g e r , 1958). A typical case is presented in Fig. I. Continued studies on 30 such patients (to be reported in a forthcoming communication) revealed that the great majority of them reacted in the same way. However, the hormone failed to produce any effect in a group of 7 patients. These women have heen submitted to a detailed investigation, the results of which are reported in this paper.

The present report describes a wonian with amenorrhea, adi posity, virilism, endometrial hyperplasia, and diffuse luteinization of the ovaries. The special interest of the case lies in the fact that the ovaries were completely removed and examined histologically, that the urinary excretion of gonadotrophin, estrogens, I 7-ketosteroids and pregnandiol and the plasma levels of 17-hydroxycorticosteroids were estimated before as well as after operation.

The plasma levels of 17‐hydroxycorticosteroids were studied in 34 children without evident disease. The results obtained are in good agreement with those previously reported by others.

After a normal labour the plasma levels of 17‐hydroxycorticosteroids of 64 Rh‐isoimmunized mothers who are all multiparae are significantly higher than the plasma levels of normal multiparae. It is suggested that the Rh‐isoimmunized mothers due to the disease of their expected infants are under a more pronounced psychological strain than the normal multiparae.
