In this article we utilize the concept of reflexivity, proposed by Anthony Giddens, in order to understand some of the conditions that involve the relationships between journalism and society in the domain of modernity. The first movement takes place around the notion of reflexivity, needed for the comprehension of the transformations that modernity has gone through. In a second movement, we take as reference the concepts of noticeability, agenda setting and framing, fundamental for the comprehension of journalism, including the multiple negotiations undertaken by the social actors. In the sequence, we identify how reflexivity is a concept that lends itself to a methodological dimension in making explicit the means under which the media, and particularly journalism, interact with the social complex.

The notion of context, which is fundamental to a series of analytical perspectives, gains in this article problematizations that highlights its instability, particularly defined from the connections with temporality. We seek to show that, in relation to textualities, context relations go beyond the dichotomy “inside” or “outside” of the text, since they are marked by the historical, theoretical and epistemological positions of the researches and their agents in the search for contextualization. For its part, the context, usually seen as a kind of past, background or frame that would assist in the understanding of texts, events, and other social and linguistic phenomena. Its seen as a function of complex temporal crossings. We propose, from the recognition of the temporal instability of the context, that the future, seen as anticipation, prediction or other strategies to “dominate” it, is the temporality often absent from the contextual analyzes, when it should be a primordial condition.

In this article we discuss AIDS as a disruptor happening in two dimensions: on social relations and on the news coverage of it that have been made. Derives from this condition their exemplary character to explore the notion of the power of affecting of certain happenings. Our reflections about the disruptor power and for that very emblematic – of AIDS, as a happening that affects and is affected by the social life, and the media coverage will be based on some research on the subject that we have already developed for more than two decades. When it emerged as problematic happening AIDS has forced many medical-scientific and social mobilizations in an attempt to understand it, (a) movement that significantly affected news coverage about the syndrome and the happenings it triggered.

This essay proposes the notion of pertinence as a guiding element in communication research. If not a long time ago challenges such as defining the “communication object” seemed to be the main difficulties facing communication research, today choosing the best methodological approaches remains an unresolved issue. Even if at a first glance methodological hesitation seems to be negative, looking from another point of view, that of the wealth and diversity of communication research, method issues will show to be positive regarding the full development of the area, including the questions related the definition of the “communication objects”, which are multiple, requiring different methodological approaches. The notion of pertinence developed in this paper should be understood as part of the methodological effort to understand communication and its issues from three interconnected domains: theoretical, empirical and analytical. Keywords Pertinence. Communication. Research. Hermeneutics.
