No Deep Pockets: Some Stylized Empirical Results on Firms’ Financial Constraints

Carlos Carreira; Filipe Carreira da Silva

This paper is a survey of recent empirical work on financial constraints faced by firms. It is organized as a series of stylized results which mirror what is generally understood about the severity of financial constraints and the effects that they have upon firms. The review of the literature shows that (a) financial constraints are a widespread key concern for firms, hindering their ability to carry out their optimal investment and growth trajectories and (b) the severity of such constraints depends on institutional and firm specific characteristics, as well as on the nature of investment projects.

Do financial constraints threat the innovation process? Evidence from Portuguese firms

Filipe Carreira da Silva; Carlos Carreira

This paper broadly addresses the financing problems of the innovation process, by analysing the extent to which financial constraints hinder firms’ investment in R&D and innovation, as well as investigating the role of public financial support in alleviating such constraints. In order to overcome the problems associated with measuring financial constraints, we make use of both indirect and direct measures of constraints. Our findings suggest that while financial constraints have a perverse effect upon R&D investment and innovation, there is no evidence that subsidies mitigate such constraints. Accordingly, we raise a number of questions regarding the efficiency and effectiveness of subsidies in alleviating firms’ financial constraints.

Are small firms more dependent on the local environment than larger firms? Evidence from Portuguese manufacturing firms

Carlos Carreira; Luis Lopes

This paper analyses the impact on firm-level total factor productivity of both agglomeration economies and regional knowledge, using an unbalanced panel of Portuguese manufacturing firms covering the period 1996–2004. Controlling for the endogeneity problem using the Arellano and Bond (1991) difference GMM estimator, we found that both localization and urbanization economies have a significant and positive effect on firms’ TFP, with the latter playing the most important role. Sectoral specialization economies are important for small and medium firms, but not for large firms. However, larger firms profit more from regional knowledge than smaller ones.

Regional knowledge spillovers: a firm-based analysis of non-linear effects

Carlos Carreira; Luis Lopes

ABSTRACT This paper revisits the question of the role of knowledge externalities in firm productivity. It also addresses the overlooked issue of a plausible non-linear effect and differences among industries. Using a panel of Portuguese manufacturing firms, it finds that regional knowledge spillovers differ substantially across industries and they are non-linear, which is critical issue to promoting more assertive regional policies.
