Carlos Lozares; Joan Miquel Verd; Sara Moreno; Oriol Barranco; Matilde Massó

This paper on the relationship between training and labour insertion draws on a research study that is currently under way; consequently, the findings presented are not conclusive but provisional. In these circumstances, the author draws attention to general approaches, objectives and methodology. An original and interesting approach is taken to this subject, one that consists of proposing and analysing the aforementioned relationship from a broader perspective than those generally encompassed in the more commonplace theories, both in terms of the social context and the overall dimensions that define training. Hence, curricular factors and work experience, coupled with socialisation, social networks, various bibliographical events, worker strategies and behaviour and attitude-linked aspects, could have a significant bearing on labour insertion against a backdrop of sustained structural crisis in the field of employment. The structure of global centrality measures

Carlos Lozares; Pedro López-Roldán; Mireia Bolíbar; Dafne Muntanyola

The aim of this article is to identify and analyse the logic and structure of centrality measures applied to social networks. On the basis of the article by Borgatti and Everett, identifying the latent functions of centrality, we first use a survey of personal networks with 450 cases to perform an empirical study of the differences and correspondences between degree, closeness and betweenness centrality in personal networks. Then, we examine the correspondences between the three global indicators in each type of centrality: the maximum value, the mean value and the hierarchy or centralization. The results provide a better understanding of the centrality indicators of networks and the reality that they express in an empirical context.

Network cohesion and social support

Joel Martí; Mireia Bolíbar; Carlos Lozares

Abstract This article analyses the effects of personal network cohesion on different types of social support using two dimensions of cohesion: network closure (defined as a tightly knit set of actors around the ego) and cliquishness (defined as the extent to which an actor is connected with a number of cohesive sub-sets of alters). Data were obtained from a personal networks’ survey conducted in Catalonia (Spain), which was completed by 441 adults and gathered information about exchange of social support in networks made of 30 alters. A multilevel analysis disentangles the effects on support of these two structural dimensions at the network-level from compositional effects at the network and tie-level. The results show that network closure does not play a relevant role in support once confounders at the network and tie levels are controlled for. However, cliquishness has a significant association with labor-related support and housing support, net of statistical controls. Implications of these results in network research are discussed.

Working time flexibility against time of life inflexibility

Carlos Lozares; Faustino Miguélez

The intentions of this article are, first, to clarify the reasons underlying new contradictions that are arising between the increasing flexibility of productive working time and the increasing inflexibility of domestic work and time off work; secondly, to ascertain what strategies are developed in practice by people who wish to overcome these contradictions. The authors develop their arguments on the basis of research carried out in the factory in Spain of one multinational company.

Carlos Lozares; Joan Miquel Verd

Abtract - Reticulated Approach to Temporal Dynamics in Biographic Narratives: This article proposes a specific approach to the analysis of biographic narratives by means of using the social networks perspective. More specifically, and more than other analyses, network formalisation can be used to capture the episodic memory present in narratives. To do so, the notions of environment/episode and of narrative passage are used to connect those features focused on the interaction and the dynamic dimension of narratives. The proposed procedure is illustrated by analyzing a fragment of a narrative interview.
