This paper deals with the human consequences caused by modes of working and managing in the restructuring of banking work. It analyzes the mobility – transferences of place and/or position – of employees submitted to restructuring in a public banking institution and presents the consequences of restructuring from the viewpoint of the bank workers. It is a case study, whose data were collected from corporate documents, personal interviews and semi-structured interviews in 1998 and 2003. Data received statistical and content analysis. Results indicate that the restructuring of banking work caused mobility in different manners. The worst effects were on the senior employees and on those who had more length of service, since they descended in the hierarchy. The main human consequences were the instability in work stability, involuntary nomadism, short-term relationships, break of trust and psychic suffering.

The present article aims to analyze how the Magazine Voce S/A approaches the thematic of psychic suffering in contemporary work. the study is based on an exploratory-descriptive research, and twelve editions of the Magazine Voce S/A, from the period of July of 2005 until June of 2006 have been analyzed. Due to the analysis (Minayo, 1994), three main categories emerged: the causes of the suffering; its consequences for individuals and for organizations; indicators of health prevention and maintenance. As results of the research, it is emphasized that the individuals are presented as the only responsible for the suffering at work. It has also concluded that subjects such as the experiences of insecurity and uncertainness feelings, the increase of the competitiveness and big solicitation, are presented in many articles of the magazine. these articles praise prescriptive tips to overcome suffering without arguing the causes that generate suffering beyond the individual sphere.

This article results from an exploratory study that aimed to analyze how a business magazine represents the body in its reporting. The body representations found were categorized into two groups - gender and style - analyzed in accordance with theoretical references about work and body in the contemporary. Considering the results, it was possible to identify that the body representations in the journal goes through a homogenization of executives lifestyles. There was also information regarding requirements for standardization and adaptation of the bodies to a particular model of professional success that goes beyond the ways of working and invades the individuals subjectivity. Furthermore, the analysis allowed a glimpse into the body as being built and signified according to the demands of todays consumer society.

This article relates immaterial labor and subjectiv ity based on the current forms of control in a Portuguese banking institution. It is based on a ca se study, with data collected by means of individua l interviews with bank employees and sector represent atives, and on documentary sources provided by the company and by representative institutions of t he banking sector in Portugal. Two management models implemented by the bank were analysed and re lated to the concepts of immaterial labor and to mechanisms of the new technological paradigm that i s built around information technology. The models examined drive the rhizomatic control modes that produce the individual and collective existence of the workers by means of a continual “m olding of oneself”. Rhizomatic control is installed using subtlety, seduction, sophistication and justi fication, since the management of immaterial labor grants a margin of freedom to workers through selfmanagement, understood as self-control. Rhizomatic control gives rise to a standardised and greed subjectivity.

Humanity has undergone constant changes that relate to the ways people experience time - more and more accelerated - and space - more and more flexible. This article is a result of an exploratory study with a qualitative focus that seeks to comprehend how the time-space compression operates. For the analysis, indicators of the ways people work and live in the contemporaneity were used, extracted from articles published by a popular business magazine from July, 2005 to June, 2006. Concepts developed by Bauman, Harvey and Virilio were very useful for the analysis of the object of the present study. Among the results observed, we highlight the intense use of information technologies, which contribute to the development of different perceptions, such as being constantly connected and the non-existence of barriers. The distinction between time and space for work and time and space for the family/leisure is weakened. The ways of working in the contemporaneity compel people to adopt auto-management patterns to deal with the constant flux. Time-space compression seems to provoke different impressions, sufferings and (un)certainties.

The present qualitative exploratory research aims to analyze the experience of personal dilemmas in the context of banking immaterial labor. The theoretical support is mainly offered by Bauman, Sennett and Gaulejac. The data collection method used was semi-structured individual interviews and two focus groups, all counting 38 participants. The results were analyzed according to the pertinent literature and they indicate that personal dilemmas in the banking work are related to fear of incompetence stigma; to the involuntary nomadism; to the fact that work captures and dominates time after work; to competition for merit; fear of professional stagnation; and to health conditions under precarious labor relations.

This article examines gender relations at work regarding the issues of masculinity, and argues for widening the focus of gender studies within the organizational field in Brazil. Although male workers are widely studied, it is important to consider the gender perspective, questioning the idea of standard workers, from which norm women are detached. This study aims to analyze how hegemonic masculinity ideals produced in the context of an organization are experienced, and how they affect the life-styles of men and women. Data analyzed in the light of the post-structuralist theory pointed out the organizational context as active in the production and enhancement of certain styles of masculinity, which become hegemonic, in detriment of others. Furthermore, the analysis enabled an understanding of the dynamics of masculinity in the organization under study, considering the processes of subjectification. As a theoretical contribution to the organizational field, this study offers a view of power relations and hierarchies among masculinities, rather than only male domination over women.
