Abstract The Gymnastic Systems are understood here as a group of knowledge systematized by the scientific thought, which had been solidified in Europe along the nineteenth century, thus constituting shaped forms of body education. They are revealed as one more product resulting from urban enlargement, urban affirmation of life in society, which has the city as a center of power. The city and bodies, which inhabit in it, become an object of intervention and domain of science. The Gymnastic Systems intend to contribute to the physical regeneration of society, preserving, in general, population is health, as well as getting the soldier ready for the battle. So the Gymnastics, which appears and asseverates itself in the period, presents on one hand, a protective competence by the army through certain techniques, and on the other hand, by the medical institution from whom it receives the authority of its knowledge. From an archive composed by 342 French textbooks of moral and hygiene, this paper analyzes how a biopower or a micropower is formed in school discourse. Body is here built, flesh is worked as it has been by other Books (biblos in Greek). We can see clearly how the jewish-christian, catholic or, more widely, monotheistic precepts are very present in these textbooks of moral and hygiene published in France between the end of the 19th Century and the 1970’s. However, it’s important to highlight that these textbooks are part of the Republican school which in France, according to the 1905’s laws, is described as separated from the Church and since Jules Ferry (1880-1882) as a laic institution.

The mountains and the coast are present in the urban imaginary of Sao Paulo State in the 1940s as appropriate spots for summer camps. The climate, the altitude, the water and the sun are natural elements at these places, scientifically considered as instruments able to restore organic frailties of children who have their health spoiled by the disturbing pace and stratagems of their urban lifestyle. Therefore, educational and medical procedures are organized at these school holiday institutions, turning them into time dedicated to educate and strengthen the body. This article aims to study this education of the body performed in summer camps that, by privileging nature and its elements, reinforces and draws behaviors and manners of a hygienic lifestyle for the city and its dwellers.

The clothes occupy a privileged place in the history of humanity and its sexual, ethnic, religious, political or daily specifics reveal this positioning. A piece of clothing constitutes a fundamental human being attribute and the act of dressing obeys social determinations, which are the result of a laborious process of awareness transformation related to the body and its exposure, the tolerance to nudity and body nature. This work aims to locate, select and analyze articles and images published in Brazilian newspapers that belong to the domain of Physical Education and Sports between the years of 1920 and 1940 and seeks to understand the reasons for the use of specific clothes in these practices in their hygienic, moral and aesthetic dimensions, present in the arguments developed in that period. The analysed sources consist in three magazines published in Brazil during the period delimited for this study.

This article aimed to describe scientific discourse and modern practices about the body in the nineteenth century and the turn of the twentieth century, identifying the consolidation of the machine-body representation as influential in other practices such as literature, photography, and especially gymnastics in the context of European cultural production. Its sources were discourses of Claude Bernard and Georges Demeny. After analyzing those discourses, it concluded that the machine-body metaphor influenced gymnastics, which, in order to justify itself as a practice, in the Demeny´s words, evolved to its positive phase.
