During the nineteenth century in Europe, new views on the body resulted in the development of two main systematisations of games and physical exercises: gymnastics and sports. During this period many European – among them many Germans – emigrated to the American continent in pursuit of new opportunities and a better life. In Brazil, the German immigrants settled primarily in the southern and south-eastern regions of the country, where they established many institutions with different purposes, such as clubs for the practice of the German gymnastics (Turnen) and sports. This study aimed at analysing Turnen and sports as specific ways of body education and also a means of preserving the German culture in the Turnerschaft von 1890 in São Paulo and Sport Club Germania. Both clubs were established by German immigrants in the city of São Paulo (Brazil) in the period between the end of the nineteenth century and the Second World War, a time period when all foreign institutions in Brazil were forced to go through deep structural changes.

Located on the northeast of Santa Catarina, in the Itajai Valley, Blumenau is known in Brazil as one of the cities with greater German influence over its culture and history. Therefore, the following question guides this essay: how did German immigrants use shooting clubs as a means for the emergence of a physical culture in the city? The analyses point to the centrality of the Schutzenvereine as important spaces to develop and cultivate traditions and bodily practices brought from the old continent as well as to establish important devices for consolidation of a physical culture by part of Blumenau’s residents.

This paper focuses on the work of Johann Christoph Friedrich Guts Muths. At the end of the 18 th Century, this German teacher published one of the fundamental works for German gymnastics: Gymnastik fur die Jugend (Gymnastics for Youth). Based essentially on the theories of the medical police, it presents a strong defense of the introduction of physical exercises as important means of regenerating and strengthen the German population.
