Objective: To identify predictors of stress and coping strategies adopted by nursing students. Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted with 146 nursing students. The research instruments consisted of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (WOC) and the Instrument for the Assessment of Stress in Nursing Students (ASNS). Data were analyzed using the Pearsons correlation coefficient and regression analysis. Results: The following predictors of stress were identified: professional education, acquired practical knowledge, and free time and leisure. Predictors of stress were associated with denial and escape-avoidance coping strategies. Conclusion: The most common strategies used by students in stressful events were considered negative and of poor effectiveness, as efforts were focused on emotions and not on the problem, compromising students’ professional training process.

The Moral Distress Scale was designed to assess the severity and frequency of the moral distress experienced by nursing professionals in everyday situations. The objective of this study was to analyze the psychometric characteristics of the Moral Distress Scale adapted to Brazilian nursing. Through factor analysis, five constructs were identified: lack of competence in the work team; disregard for patient autonomy, inadequate working conditions, denial of the nursing role as an advocate in terminal patients; denial of the nursing role as an advocate of the patient. The proposed pentafactorial solution is statistically and semantically more appropriate to the Brazilian nursing scenario. Based on these results, the scale is considered to be valid and reliable, showing the necessary requirements regarding convergent and discriminating validity as well as internal consistency to be used while evaluating the intensity and frequency of moral distress in Brazilian nursing professionals.

Objective: To identify predictors and factors associated with the satisfaction of nursing students regarding the curriculum and school activities, social/professional interaction, and environment of the undergraduate program. Methods: Cross-sectional study, conducted with 123 nursing students of a public university. The Nursing Student Satisfaction Scale was the research instrument. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and logistic regression analysis were used for data analysis. Results: In the descriptive analysis, the curriculum and teaching dimension presented the highest mean (3.57), followed by the environment dimension (3.33), and social/professional interactions (3.28). Younger students and those who had children, more intensely acknowledged the curriculum and teaching dimension as a factor promoting satisfaction. Conclusion: It is necessary to promote improvements in the education and training scenario, investing in curriculum issues and education, to contribute to a satisfactory academic experience through the reduction of barriers to academic education.

Objective: to identify stress triggers in the educational environment as perceived by nursing students. Method: descriptive-exploratory, quantitative study, conducted with 146 nursing students to whom the Stress Assessment Scale was applied, between august and September 2013. Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance and linear regression were used to analyze the data. Results: the most important stress triggers identified was lack of time to be with friends/family and to take part in leisure activities or to rest. Additionally, difficulties faced in relationships between professors and students were directly related to poor academic performance and perceived poor knowledge acquisition. Conclusion: identifying and understanding the factors that stress trigger among nursing students can enable better management of stressful situations, contributing to improved academic performance and, consequently, improved quality of life among students. DESCIPTORS: Nursing students. Stress. Nursing education. Nursing.

Methods: Qualitative research conducted in two hospitals in southern Brazil, with twelve nurses, using semi-structured interviews in June 2014. Results: Nurses advocate for the rights of hospitalized children by performing actions intended to ensure the right to life, dignity and health. Conclusions: The actions of nurses defending the rights of hospitalized children were mainly performed by providing guidance that enabled the participation of children in their own care and promoting the autonomy of parents or legal guardians to make decisions concerning the care provided to their children. Implications for practice: Acknowledging health advocacy actions represents advancement in the practice of nursing, as it provides nurses opportunities to cope with future experiences in the pediatric context.

Method: this was a quantitative exploratory and descriptive study using a cross-sectional design conducted with 123 undergraduate nursing students studying at a public university in the south of Brazil. The cross-cultural adaptation was performed according to international guidelines. Validation for use in a Brazilian context was performed using factor analysis and Cronbachs alpha. Results: based on the expert committee assessment and pre-test, face and content validity were considered satisfactory. Factor analysis resulted in three constructs: curriculum and teaching; professional social interaction, and learning environment. The internal consistency of the instrument was satisfactory: the value of Cronbachs alpha coefficient was 0.93 for the instrument as a whole, and between 0.88 and 0.89 for the constructs. Conclusion: the Brazilian version of the Nursing Student Satisfaction Scale was shown to be reliable and validated for the evaluation of student satisfaction with undergraduate nursing programs, considering the aspects teaching activities, curriculum, professional social interaction, and learning environment.
