This study aimed to evaluate the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of carcass and meat of lambs fed sunflower cake. Were used 28 Suffolk crossbred lambs, with 4 months of age and average weight of 21.00 ± 0.74 kg, divided into four treatments: 0% (control), 10%, 20% and 30% of sunflower cake inclusion (% DM). The criteria adopted for the slaughter was body condition score (3, on scale of 1 to 5). The inclusion of sunflower cake did not influence the measurement of length and carcass depth (P>0.05), pH 24 hours (P>0.05), yields of commercial cuts (P>0.05), as well as fat distribution, fat thickness and marbling (P>0.05). There was a linear effect (P 0.05). In relation to the control treatment, the inclusion of 20% and 30% of sunflower cake influenced negatively the ribeye area (12.00 and 11.43 cm2, respectively) (P<0.05), cold carcass weight (13.19 and 12.58 kg, respectively) (P<0.05), and confinement time (136.85 and 138.39 days, respectively) (P<0.05). The inclusion of 10% of sunflower cake can be recommended for use in diets of feedlot lambs, since it allows the production of meat and carcasses with quantitative and qualitative characteristics satisfactory, without adversely affecting the performance characteristics.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing levels of concentrate on the production of carcass and non-carcass components of feedlot ewes. Twenty-four crossbred ewes were randomly distributed in four treatments: diet with 20%; 40%; 60%; and 80% concentrate. Animals were slaughtered when those receiving the diet with 80% concentrate reached adult live weight (50 kg LW). The data were analyzed by variance and regression analyses. The weights of the shoulder and leg rise linearly with the increase in the levels of concentrate, but shoulder yield was not affected, with an average of 16%, and the leg yield reduced linearly (28 g for each 1% concentrate added). The percentage value of the viscera reduced linearly, as well as those of head and paws. The non-carcass components represented values of 34.64; 38.60; 38.55; and 39.88% of the LW for the levels of 20, 40, 60 and 80% of concentrate, respectively. The weight of the cuts is affected positively by the increase in the levels of concentrate. The increase in the levels of concentrate promotes lower percentage of viscera and increase in the deposition of back fat of the commercial meat cuts.

Two experiments were run to evaluate the pattern of fermentation, the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDDM) of high moisture corn grain silages, with or without microbial inoculation, in different processing. Experiment 1 dealt with inoculation of high moisture corn triturated grain silages, in completely randomized experimental design. Experiment 2 dealt with inoculation of high moisture corn triturated and laminated grain silages, in completely randomized experimental design, in 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. The material was ensiled in experimental silos of PVC (50cm length and 100mm diameter). Samples were taken before and after ensilage. In the experiment 1, the IVDDM of inoculated silages was major than control silages, with averages of 80.67 and 79.80%, for inoculated and control silages, respectively. pH and NH3-N (% total N) and DM losses were not influenced by inoculation, with 3.91, 1.19% total N and 1.18% DM, respectively. In the experiment 2, there was not influence by inoculation and processing on IVDDM, mean of 74.59%. pH and NH3-N were influenced by inoculation, 3.89 vs 3.94 and 0.63 vs 0.72% total N, by inoculated and control silages, respectively. The microbial inoculation of high moisture corn grain does not promote alterations either in the fermentative pattern, chemical composition or in the DM losses in corn high moisture silages, independent of processing. There was an improvement of 1.09% in IVDMD of high moisture corn silages inoculated.

Two experiments were run to evaluate the fermentation and the chemical composition of corn silages, aerial part and ear of corn, submitted or not to frost, with or without microbial inoculation, both completely randomized experimental design, in 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. Samples were taken before and after of ensilage. In the aerial part silage, inoculation did not influence the dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDDM), with an average of 57.49%, and ammonia-N (NH3-N) and DM losses, with means equal to 6.07% total N and 0.99% respectively. The frost caused lower DM content, 23.05% vs 26.48%DM, respectively, and higher CP content of silages, 7.13 vs 6.00% CP. The ear of corn silage exposed to frost had higher DM and OM, without influence on CP, 1.71%. The frost affected the chemical composition of corn silages, aerial part and ear of corn, and they had proper pH. Inoculation did not influence the fermentation and chemical composition of corn silages, aerial part and ear of corn, submitted or not to frost.
