Abstract The present article examines some theoretical issues and empirical findings concerning the impact of the second child´s pregnan cy on familydynamics. Based on a systemic approach the marital relationship the parent-firstborn relationship and the role of social suppor t at thatmoment are focused. Furthermore it examines the impact of this transition period on the firstborn. In spite of the studies’ inc onsistencies, many authors have emphasized that the adaptation process of a family with two children had already begun during pregnancy. H owever, this period changes have some particularities, when compared to the changes after the baby’s birth. Besides, the interactions and familyrelationships during pregnancy may play an important role on familys’ adaptation after the second child’s birth.Uniterms: family dynamics; pregnancy; child. 1 Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Instituto de Psicologia. Abstract The present study investigated mothers’ perceptions regarding the reaction of the firstborn to the pregnancy with second child. Eight pregnantwomen, who had one pre-school child and were in the third trimester of pregnancy, participated in the study. A qualitative cont ent analysisof the interviews revealed that the pregnancy and the proximity of childbirth unleashed anxiety and jealousy in the firstborn, accompaniedby demonstrations of joy at the arrival of the sibling. All the children showed attitudes indicative of jealousy, including fea r of losing mothers’attention and affection, as well as signs of aggressiveness towards the mother’s belly. The results suggest that the mother’s p regnancy is anoutstanding event in the life of the firstborn, emphasizing the importance of parental support in this period.Uniterms : Pregnancy. Firstborn. Sibling rivalry: Proposing a conceptual definition . Sibling rivalry can be thought as a normal and, perhaps, daily experience for children. Despite its relevance for sibling relationship and for family functioning as a whole, the concept of sibling rivalry lacks a clear and shared definition in the scientific community, being confused and used simultaneously with the notions of conflict, jealousy and competition. This article presents a literature review on the theme of sibling rivalry, questioning its conceptual definition. While the definition of jealousy seems to appear more clearly in the international literature, the same is not true for the concept of sibling rivalry. Due to the complexity of conceptions involved in sibling relationship, a comprehensive understanding of the concept of sibling rivalry, that includes jealousy manifestations and sibling competition,

Sibling rivalry can be considered a normal experience among children. The present study investigated maternal impressions about sibling rivalry expressed by firstborns during their second pregnancy. The study included 24 pregnant women fromPorto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, who were in their last trimester of pregnancy and already had a child aged from two to six years. The qualitative content analysis, based on a semi-structured interview, revealed a vast number of reports regarding sibling rivalry, which was manifested through aggression directed at the unborn baby/ mothers belly, fear of losing parents love/attention, and fear of invasion of personal space. At the same time that they identified themselves with the unborn babies, in order to deal with this rivalry, firstborns tried to belittle their unborn siblings. The expectant mothers made an effort to teach their first-born child to share and to prevent jealous feelings.
