The Clinical Study about Honilirls Placenta Herbal Acupuncture on Bell`s Palsy

Objectives : This study has been designed and performed to identify the effect on Bell`s palsy according to the injection of herbal medicine induced from the Hominis Placenta. Methods : We measured the facial palsy changes of the patients who were admitted for Bell`s palsy in the Oriental Medical hospital of Dongeui medical center from 03-01-2004 to 07-31-2004. Bell`s palsy patients were divided into two groups. One group(A group) was injected with Hominis Placenta herbal acupuncture. The other group(B group) was injected with normal saline. Then effects of these treatment was evaluated by Yanagihara`s unweighted grading system. Results : A group was marked more higher than B group in treatment outcome. we discovered that it is significant differences between two groups after 4 week. Conclusions : These results provided that A group is more effective than B group. For clearly proving the effect of Hominis Placenta herbal acupuncture on Bell`s palsy, it is need more sample`s number and more treatment`s duration.

The comparison of Effectiveness between Bee Venom and Sweet Bee Venom Therapy on Chronic Lower Back Pain

Objective The aim of this study is to investigate if Sweet Bee Venom(SBV) Therapy has the equal effect in comparison with Bee Venom (BV) Therapy on Chronic Lower Back Pain. Methods Clinical studies were conducted to 39 patients who were treated Chronic Lower Back Pain in Dept. of Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Dongeui University from March 1 to June 30, 2008. Subjects were ran- domly devided into 2 groups : BV treated group(Group A, n=19), SBV treated group(Group B, n=20) In BV treated group(Group A), we treated patients with dry needle acupuncture and BV Therapy. In SBV treated group(Group B), we treated patients with dry needle acupuncture and SBV Therapy. All process of treatment were performed by double blinding method. 1. To estimate the efficacy of venom in controlling pain, we have checked Visual Analog Scale(VAS). 2. For evaluating functional changes of patients, we have checked Oswestry Lower Back Disability Questionnaire(ODI).

Ethanol Extract of Ganoderma lucidum Augments Cellular Anti-oxidant Defense through Activation of Nrf2/HO-1

Objectives: The mushroom Ganoderma lucidum has been widely used as a traditional herbal medicine for many years. Although several studies have focused on the anti-oxidative activity of this mushroom, the molecular mechanisms underlying its activity have not yet been clearly established. The present study investigated the cytoprotective effect of ethanol extract of Ganoderma lucidum (EGL) against oxidative stress (hydrogen peroxide, H2O2) and elucidated the underlying mechanisms in a C2C12 myoblast cell line. Methods: Oxidative stress markers were determined by using the comet assay to measure reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage. Cell viability and Western blotting analyses were employed to evaluate the cellular response to EGL and H2O2 in C2C12 cells. Transfection with nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-specific small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) was conducted to understand the relationship between Nrf2 expression and H2O2-induced growth inhibition. Results: The results showed that EGL effectively inhibited H2O2-induced growth and the generation of ROS. EGL markedly suppressed H2O2-induced comet-like DNA formation and phosphorylation of histone H2AX at serine 139 (p-γH2AX), a widely used marker of DNA damage, suggesting that EGL prevented H2O2-induced DNA damage. Furthermore, the EGL treatment effectively induced the expression of Nrf2, as well as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), with parallel phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of Nrf2 in the C2C12 myoblasts. However, zinc protoporphyrin IX, a HO-1 inhibitor, significantly abolished the protective effects of EGL against H2O2-induced accumulation of ROS and reduced cell growth. Notably, transient transfection with Nrf2-specific siRNA attenuated the cytoprotective effects and HO-1 induction by EGL, indicating that EGL induced the expression of HO-1 in an Nrf2-dependent manner. Conclusion: Collectively, these results demonstrate that EGL augments the cellular anti-oxidant defense capacity through activation of Nrf2/HO-1, thereby protecting C2C12 myoblasts from H2O2-induced oxidative cytotoxicity.

Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference of treatment effects and allergic responses to stiff neck between Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture and Sweet Bee Venom Pharmacopuncture. The effect of Hominis Placenta Pharmacopuncture on Leg spasticity of stroke patients (A Pilot study, Double blind, Randomized, Controlled Clinical Trial)

Objective : The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of Hominis Placenta Pharmacopuncture(HPP) on lower limb spasticity control in stroke patients. Methods : Twenty stroke patients with Leg spasticity were randomly divided into two groups, a Distilled water Pharmacopuncture(group I) and a HPP(group II). The number of Pharmacopuncture was 5 times a week and acupuncture treatment was 3 times a week for 3 weeks. Modified Ashworth Scale(MAS), H-reflex/M-response ratio(H/M ratio), Berg Balance Scale(BBS) and Time Up & Go(TUG) were used for evaluation of spasticity control before experiment, after 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks. Results : Group I showed significant improvement(p.05) in BBS but no significant improvement in MAS, H/M ratio, and TUG. Group II showed significant improvement(p.05) in MAS, BBS, and TUG, but no significant improvement in H/M ratio. The results showed significant difference in TUG, but no significant difference in MAS, H/M ratio and BBS between 2 groups. Conclusion : These results showed that HPP might decrease lower limb spasticity and increase leg motor function in stroke patients. Further studies will be required to examine more cases in the long period for the effect on lower limb in spasticity by HPP.

Comparison of Treatment Effect between Oriental Medicine Therapy and Oriental and Western Medicine Combination Therapy on Traffic Accident Patients

Objective The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference of treatment effect between Oriental Medicine therapy and Oriental and Western Medicine combination therapy on traffic accident patients. Methods Sixty one traffic accident patients were randomly assigned to the Oriental Medicine therapy group(group Ⅰ)and Oriental and Western Medicine combination therapy group(group Ⅱ). Evaluations were made before treatment, after one week treatment and after two weeks treatment using Visual Analog Scale(VAS), Oswestry disability Index(ODI), Neck Disability Index(NDI), Roland Morris Disability Scale(RMDS). The obtained data were analyzed and compared. Results The group Ⅰ showed significant improvement(p<0.05) according to the VAS, NDI. But that showed insignificant improvement according to the ODI, RMDS. The group Ⅱ showed significant improvement(p<0.05) according to the VAS, NDI. But that showed insignificant improvement according to the ODI, RMDS. And the difference between the two groups were insignificant according to VAS, NDI, ODI and RMDS. Conclusion There is no significant difference between the two groups after each therapy on traffic accident patients. Further studies are needed for the comparison of the Oriental Medicine therapy and Western Medicine combination therapy.

A Case of The Reduction of Symptoms, But No Change on The CT Scanning in HNP by Oriental Medical Treatment Added Mori cortex-Bee Venom Acupuncture

By process of treatment for a case which diagnosed as HNP of left posterolateral aspect of L4/5 disc and treated from the 10th, May 2001 to the 23rd, Jun 2001, the results are as follows. Method & Results : This patient was medicated Hwallaktang-gami, taken acupuncture, phototherapy, TENS, electric acupuncture, exercises, Mori Cortex-bee venom acupuncture. As a result, the patient`s clinical symptom were improved but a computed tomagraphy confirmed L4/5 and L5/S1 HNP was not changed as seen on repeated CT scanning. Conclusion : These results suggest that among conservative therapies the oriental medical treatments including Mori Cortex-bee venom acupuncture improve clinical symptom effectively. But in this case, the structure of herniated disc was not changed.

Beneficial Effect of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi Extract on Mercury Chloride-Induced Membrane Transport Dysfunction in Rabbit Renal Cortical Slices

This study was undertaken to determine whether Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi (SbG) extract exerts the protective effect against -induced alterations in membrane transport function in rabbit renal cortical slices. The slices were treated with 0.1 mM for 60 min at . caused an inhibition in PAH uptake by renal cortical slices. Such an effect was accompanied by depressed -ATPase activity and ATP depletion. SbG prevented -induced inhibition of PAH uptake in a dose-dependent manner at the concentration ranges of 0.01-0.1%. -induced inhibition of -ATPase activity and ATP depletion were significantly prevented by 0.05% SbG. These results suggest that SbG prevents -induced alterations in membrane transport function in rabbit renal cortical slices. Such protective effects of SbG may be attributed to inhibition of peroxidation of membrane lipid.
