OBJECTIVEnTo identify alterations in the respiratory system in port workers through radiographic and pulmonary function tests; to identify the use of personal protective equipment during port activities; and to relate age, working time, exposure to substances such as fertilizers and the use of personal protective equipment during port activities, to changes in the respiratory system in port workers.nnnMETHODnDescriptive and exploratory study, in south Brazilian maritime port, from July of 2014 to January of 2015. A retrospective quantitative analysis of the results of chest x-ray and spirometry of 695 port workers chart and prospective analysis of 66 workers were performed.nnnRESULTSnMost of the workers did not present radiographs 98.7% and 11.4% presented ventilatory alterations. A positive correlation was identified for the variables age, working time and spirometry results.nnnCONCLUSIONnThere was a change in the respiratory function of single port workers, which may be related to the exposure to fertilizers.

Marlise Capa Verde Almeida de Mello; Lauro Roberto Witt da Silva; Clarice Alves Bonow; Marta Regina Cezar-Vaz

Objective: To verify cervical pain symptoms in a group of office workers and investigate electromyographic signals of the upper trapezius muscle of office workers at rest. Methods: Exploratory study with an interventional approach conducted with workers from a port facility. Personal, symptomological, occupational and electrophysiological variables were examined, based on electromyographies of the cervical region. The chi-square test, student’s t-test and Mann-Whitney test were applied. Results: Among the 43 workers who participated in the study, the mean score for shoulder and back neck pain was statistically higher among women than men. The formation of positive waves occurred before and after work, affecting ten workers. The completion of the workday did not cause signification modifications in cervical electrophysiological activity. Conclusion: The study identified ergonomic variables and reports of cervicalgia, as well as positive wave recruitment in a small group of workers, indicating that the use of new muscle assessment instruments by nurses can enhance their occupational health work. The sex of the participants proved to be an important variable in muscle pain assessment, especially among women. The pre-workday period was also relevant, demonstrating that actions engaged in before work can positively or negatively influence muscle conditions for the workday. As a result of the study, a group of workers that require muscle health promotion was defined. Descritores Saúde do trabalhador; Eletromiografia; Força muscular; Cervicalgia

Marta Regina Cezar-Vaz; Clarice Alves Bonow; Marlise Capa Verde de Almeida; Cynthia Fontella Sant'Anna; Leticia Silveira Cardoso

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the effect of the mental, physical, temporal, performance, total effort and frustration demands in the overall workload, and in the same way analyze the global burden of port labor and associated factors that contribute most to their decrease or increase. Method: a cross-sectional, quantitative study, developed with 232 dock workers. For data collection, a structured questionnaire with descriptive, occupational, smoking and illicit drug use variables was applied, as well as variables on the load on the tasks undertaken at work, based on the questionnaire NASA Task Load Index. For data analysis, we used the analysis of the Poisson regression model. Results: the demands physical demand and total effort showed greater effect on the overall workload, indicating high overall load on port work (134 employees - 58.8%). The following remained associated statistically with high levels of workload: age (p = 0.044), to be employee of the wharfage (p = 0.006), work only at night (p = 0.025), smoking (p = 0.037) and use of illegal drugs (p = 0.029). Conclusion: the workload in this type of activity was high, and the professional category and work shift the factors that contributed to the increase, while the age proved to be a factor associated with a decrease.1 Apoio financeiro da Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Rio Grande do Sul (FAPERGS), Brasil, processo no 1174-2551/13-5. 2 PhD, Professor Associado, Escola de Enfermagem, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande, Rio Grande, RS, Brasil. 3 PhD, Professor Adjunto, Faculdade de Enfermagem, Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Pelotas, RS, Brasil. 4 PhD, Enfermeira, Escola de Enfermagem, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande, Rio Grande, RS, Brasil. 5 PhD, Professor Adjunto, Universidade Federal do Pampa, Uruguaiana, RS, Brasil.
