Fernanda Meneghini; Adriana Aparecida Paz; Liana Lautert

The objective of this study is to identify occupational factors associated with the three components of Burnout Syndrome among nursing workers who work in hospital care. It is a cross-sectional study carried out in a hospital located in the Serra Gaucha, RS, Brazil. Analytical statistics were applied to a sample of 164 nursing personnel. The results indicate that Burnout Syndrome components showed statistically significant associations (p<0.05) with the following occupational characteristics: work overload, lack of work motivation, conflicts of personal versus institutional values, lack of opportunity for reward, having the same task in different institutions, and the difficulty in conciliating different jobs. We conclude that maintaining adverse work conditions generates stress, forcing the employee to develop adaptive mechanisms which sometimes are not effective. Together, these factors lead to the development of Burnout Syndrome. DESCRIPTORS: Burnout professional. Occupational health. Surveillance of the workers Health; Nursing.

Rita Catalina Aquino Caregnato; Liana Lautert

This article is a case study that presents common stressors, answers to professionals individual and collective handling in the operating room. The data was collected through interview of 32 persons of the surgical team, submitted to content analysis, arising eight differentiated categories from them: significant stress experiences; stressing situations; individual behavior in the operating room; stress handling; responsibilities and compromises; behavioral responses. Even though relationship with patients generates important life experiences, the patient was considered the minor stressor agent, being the interpersonal relations the most significant one. To cope with stressful situations the professionals use the handling focused on the problem, on emotion, on relief maneuvers, and on development of social relationships. This article is a case study that presents common stressors, answers to professional’s individual and collective handling in the operating room.
