It is an exploratory research that is developed, based on case studies in six companies (three Brazilian and three Australian). The results point out the importance of informal practices and the need to establish an articulated strategy, which regard to managerial competencies management. The significant experiences related by the managers interviewed point out organizational practices and practices that have occurred outside of the companies.

This study analyzes the link between strategies and the development of managerial competences, verifying how organizational learning takes place. It is a single and exploratory case study, performed at a service company. After mapping the strategies adopted by the company, demands were identified for developing managerial competences appropriate for several periods. The findings highlight how the use of organizational strategies can generate necessities for the development of new managerial competences, considering the attributions and responsibilities which started being taken over by the managers. For the managers the circumstances which most favored their learning process were associated with initiatives of self-development and informal practices of competence articulation, always supported by the organization.

It can be organized into three approaches: lexical analysis (nature and richness of the vocabulary), syntactic (verb tenses and modes) and thematic (themes and frequency), used complementarily or separately, depending on the research objective. Whatever the approach, the volume of data is usually large and qualitative data analysis software could help simplify the operational activities. The aim of this study is to analyze the contribution of the NVivo ® and MAXQDA ® software packages in thematic content analysis. Achieving this objective involves a review of the main characteristics of thematic content analysis and an examination of both software packages, and finally, a comparison between them. The main results are: the similarity between the features available for qualitative data analysis in the two software packages and the differences in their interfaces. The potential gain provided by using these packages depends on the researcher’s knowledge of content analysis since they do not substitute the researcher in the coding process. A considerable reduction in execution time of the analysis, as well as the possibility of applying different filters are important benefits obtained aiding the researcher to reflect on the data collected and obtain inferences.

Heitor Appel; Claudia Cristina Bitencourt

Technology parks and technology incubators have been used as a way of implementation of public policies for the development of innovation and entrepreneurship. Accordingly, this study aims to comprehend the relationship between Dynamic Capabilities (DCs) and Organizational Social Capital (OSC) in the environment of incubator and technology park. Regarding study method, this is a qualitative and exploratory case study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed based on content analysis. As results, it was possible to identify the relationship between the CSO and CDs, especially the development of resources and capabilities via social ties and the role of Valetec and ITEF as promoting social interaction. The results suggest that the trajectory has the role of enhancing the benefits that businesses can obtain through CSO.

CORRELAÇÃO ENTRE ELEMENTOS DO CAPITAL SOCIAL E ORIENTAÇÃO EMPREENDEDORA: um estudo exploratório

Rosana da Rosa Portella Tondolo; Vilmar Antonio Gonçalves Tondolo; Claudia Cristina Bitencourt

On the organizational studies field, social capital stands out especially in relationships with aspects of organizational behavior, industrial processes and management, and strategic processes. Both entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial orientation are issues connected to social capital, because they foster employment, income and social inclusion of a community. The objective of this study is to assess the level of correlation between the allocation of social capital and entrepreneurial orientation of students of organizations where these students work for. We investigated a sample of 185 students of Business Administration and Accounting courses of a College of the Southern Brazil. This research presents exploratory study and quantitative approach. The main results are presented as follow: the correlation between constructs of social capital and entrepreneurial orientation are classified as weak, and in some cases there are negative correlations. In addition, it was identified that the lowest correlation is presented between the dimensions of proactivity in the local context (CCS) and proactivity (COE), however, that relationship was expected to show a strong relationship. At the end, we present limitations of this study and suggestions for future studies.

Maria Josefina Klein; Claudia Cristina Bitencourt

Identifying and assessing the scales of dynamic capabilities

Cíntia Cristina Silva de Araújo; Cristiane Drebes Pedron; Claudia Cristina Bitencourt

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the existing measure instruments for dynamic capabilities (DCs) in order to understand the tendencies of quantitative studies on DCs as well as to evaluate the reliability and validity of these scales. Design/methodology/approach To accomplish this objective, the authors conducted a systematic review of literature on DCs. Findings Main findings indicate that quantitative research works on DCs have focused on the relationship between DCs, innovation, organization performance, knowledge management and absorptive capacity. Findings also show that efforts to measure DCs quantitatively are recent and lack reliable methodology. Research limitations/implications One limitation of this research is that the authors conducted the systematic review on two databases. However, the authors conducted the research on the two most used databases in management research. Practical implications Findings show that academicians have plenty of room to work on quantitative research works on DCs as well as to develop robust scales to measure this construct in diverse business sectors. Originality/value This paper is the first to analyze the existing scales that measure DCs.
