Our PDT experience in the treatment of non-melanoma skin cancer over the last 7 years

J Baptista; Cláudia Maria Simões Martinez; L. Leite; M. Cochito

Background  Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) with 5‐aminolevulinic acid (ALA) was first described by Kennedy et al. in 1990; currently, accumulated evidence shows that topical PDT is effective in the treatment of actinic keratoses, Bowens disease and superficial basal cell carcinoma, being potentially advantageous where size, anatomical location or number of lesions limit the efficacy and/or the acceptability of conventional therapies. It involves the use of photosensitizing drugs and the administration of an appropriate light source to activate the sensitizing agent, which leads to the production of activated oxygen species for tissue destruction. The topically administered prodrug 5‐ALA is converted within cells into the active photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX, via haem cycle, with preferential accumulation in tumour cells.

OBJECTIVES To perform a bibliometric analysis of theses and dissertations on prematurity in the Capes database from 1987 to 2009. METHODS This is a descriptive study that used the bibliometric approach for the production of indicators of scientific production. Operationally, the methodology was developed in four steps: 1) construction of the theoretical framework; 2) data collection sourced from the abstracts of theses and dissertations available in the Capes Thesis Database which presented the issue of prematurity in the period 1987 to 2009; 3) organization, processing and construction of bibliometric indicators; 4) analysis and interpretation of results. RESULTS Increase in the scientific literature on prematurity during the period 1987 to 2009; production is represented mostly by dissertations; the institution that received prominence was the Universidade de São Paulo. The studies are directed toward the low birth weight and very low birth weight preterm newborn, encompassing the social, biological and multifactorial causes of prematurity. CONCLUSIONS There is a qualified, diverse and substantial scientific literature on prematurity developed in various graduate programs of higher education institutions in Brazil.

Infants born preterm and/or with low birth weight may present a clinical condition of organic instability and usually face a long period of hospitalization in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units, being exposed to biopsychosocial risk factors to their development due to decreased spontaneous movement and excessive sensory stimuli. This study assumes that there are relationships between the integration of sensory information of preterm infants, motor development and their subsequent effects. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the sensory processing and motor development in preterm infants aged 4-6 months and compare performance data with their peers born at term. METHOD This was a cross-sectional and comparative study consisting of a group of preterm infants (n=15) and a group of term infants (n=15), assessed using the Test of Sensory Functions in Infants (TSFI) and the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS). RESULTS The results showed no significant association between motor performance on the AIMS scale (total score) and sensory processing in the TSFI (total score). However, all infants who scored abnormal in the total TSFI score, subdomain 1, and subdomain 5 presented motor performance at or below the 5th percentile on the AIMS scale. CONCLUSION Since all infants who presented definite alteration in tolerating tactile deep pressure and poor postural control are at risk of delayed gross motor development, there may be peculiarities not detected by the tests used that seem to establish some relationship between sensory processing and motor development.

This study aimed to perform bibliometric analysis of scientific literature on evaluation of vision available in the database Lilacs. The research methodology has observed the following steps: review of literature on the evaluation of vision and bibliometrics, collection of data in the database Lilacs, organization, processing and bibliometric analysis of data collected using the software MS Excel. Using the search terms “visual assessment”, “assessment of vision”, “functional assessment of vision”, “visually impaired”, “low vision” and “disorders of vision”, being selected 27 articles. As a results were produced the following indicators: the predominant languages of scientific productions were Portuguese and Spanish, the original article written in co-authorship is the predominant type of publication, the themes discussed were: low vision, visual acuity, amblyopia and glaucoma. It was also noted that not all authors have specifically or on assessments of vision, and proposed the cognitive assessment and quality of life of visually impaired. It is advisable to conduct further research to demonstrate the importance of early assessment of vision in children, to ensure that the intervention, when necessary, take place as soon as possible and prevent the delay caused by visual impairment. It should also ensure that these visual findings are complementary with assessments that characterize situations in which individuals who already have some type of disability can use their vision more effectively

Patrícia Carla de Souza Della Barba; Cláudia Maria Simões Martinez; Bianca Gonçalves Carrasco

The aim of this study is to promote a reflection about the aspects related to the improvement of life quality of children and their families. Items and themes related to care and education are pointed out, using the social-historical point of view, as well as aspects of vulnerability and poverty situations. The theory is based on the indicators presented by UNESCO, the Brazilian Health Agency and it was originally published by OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). The concept and effective practices of children education in Brazil are presented, highlighting development and health-promotion actions in childhood, also empowerment and intersectionality, with the perspective of constructing ways to minimize the great amount of stressors that the families from less favored classes are exposed to. The necessity of investments for the continuous training of the educators is reaffirmed, considering that satisfactory results are obtained when the intervention involves family, community and public services.
