SUMMARY The influence of venous blood in the determination ofthe anion gap was studied in 50 adult clinically normal horses in Santa Maria - Brazil. The results (mEq/1) were: Na - 140 ± 2.0; K - 42 ± 0.5; Cl -102 ± 24 and HCO3 - 26.9 ± 2.0. The results were similar but slightly different from those of other authors, but without significam difference, although these authors have used arterial blood. It was concluded that the venous blood can replace the arterial blood in order to determinate the anion gap in horses.

In humans, arteriovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (AV-ECMO) is a life support technique capable to assume in part or totally lungs functions, when these are not able to promote appropriated hematosis. To know the viability of this method in dogs (Canis familiaris), the present study applied AV-ECMO in ten adult mixed-breed dogs, with expected three hours of duration to each experiment. In Group 1 (n=4), mechanical ventilation and dopamine continuous infusion were associated with the extracorporeal support. In Group 2 (n=6), any other measure of intensive care was used concomitantly AV-ECMO. Blood gas analysis and lactate levels were evaluated every 10 minutes and one hour, respectively, from arterial blood samples. Inotropic support improved the blood flow through the circuit promoting a better tissue perfusion with oxygenated blood, suggested by the lactate and mean arterial pressure levels measured. Mechanical ventilation used simultaneously with AV-ECMO was able to further improve levels of blood gases. Therefore, if applied along intensive care support, AV-ECMO is a viable technique for use in dogs with respiratory failure refractory to conventional treatments.

To analyse the circadian variations of the leucocyte, fibrinogen and platelet 20 mongrel male dogs were used divided into two groups of ten animals. The first group was exposed to an inflamatory process induced by the administration of turpentine and after 24 hours the animals were treated with Aesein 1.3mg/kg from 12 to 12 hours. The second group was only exposed to the inflamatory process. Blood samples were performed in all the animals at 0,4am, 8am, 12am, 4pm, 8pm and 12pm hours of the day to examine the parameters. Aescin has determined monocytose at 0,8am, 12am, 4pm and 12pm; linfopenia at 4pm and 12pm; leucocitosis at 0,8pm and 12 pm, as well as an increase in the amount of fibrinogen at 4pm and 12pm; and a decrease in the platelets during all day. Aescin determines unstable circadian variations in the number of leucocyte, platelet and in the amount of fibrinogen in dogs with inflamatory process.

Twenty mongrel male dogs were used to anlyse the circadian variations of leucocyte, fibrinogen and platelet values. They were divided into two groups of ten animals. The first group was treated with 1.3mg/kg of Aescin every 12 hours while the second group was left without treatment. Blood samples were collected in all animals at 0 (zero), 4am, 8am, 12am 4pm, 8pm and 12pm hours of the day to determine leucocyte and platelet count and to evaluate fibrinogen. Aescin produced: eosinopenia at 4am, 8am, 12am and 4pm hours; neutrophilia at 8am, 12am, 8pm, and 12pm hours; monocytopenia at 12pm hour and lymphopenia at 8am, 4am, 8pm an 12pm hours. There was an increase in fibrinogen level at 8pm and 12pm and a decrease in the platelet number at 0 (zero), 8am, 12am, 4pm and 8pm hours. Aescin determines unstable circadian variations in the number of leucocytes, platelets and in the amount of fibrinogen in health dogs.

SUMMARY The blood, cerebrospinal fluid and aqueous humor was collected in seventeen dogs with different diseases, for urea determination, that was realized with kit Labtest and posterior statistic evaluation. The urea determination can be made in the refered fluids with similar results.

In order to evaluated the Schirmer tear test 120 dogs (51 males and 69 females) of different breeds were observed. Four tipes of filter paper were used and prepared in strips of 4cm x 0,5cm. The papers were moisted into the conjuntival sac for one minute, then removed and the umidified segment were measured with a milimetrical rule. The results were analysed by Tukey test. The Melitta filter paper was more effective, and the determined parameters were: 1,4 +/- 1,5mm - KCS; 6,7 +/- 1,0mm - tear hyposecretion; 18,0 +/- 3,4mm -normal secretion and 29,9 +/- 6,7mm - epiphora.
