Agueda Castagna de Departamento de Medicina Veterinária Preventiva Varga; Andrea Maria Lazzari; Valéria Dutra; Fernando Centro de Pesquisas Veterinárias Desidério Finamor (Cpvdf)) Poester

The ocurrence of canine brucellosis is described in a kennel from Uruguaiana city. Due to abortion registered at the kennel the suspected disease was brucellosis. The isolation of Bucella canis was realized by culturing the material collected from aborted fetuses, placenta and neonatos. The agar gel immunodiffusion test was used for sorological evaluation and showed that 72.7% (8/11) of the dogs were infected wifh the bacteria. The authors describe also the clinical signs, serological findings and also the isolation of the Brucella canis.

Epidemiological aspects about Rhodococcus equi (R. equi) at six horse-breeding farms from Bage county, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were analysed. Soil samples (36) and equine feces (143) were collected. The objective was to verify the presence of R. equi in those samples. Six soil samples were also used for pH and organic matter (OM) determination. R. equi identification was based on equi factor search and morfological, tintorial and biochemistry behavior. All the horse-breeding farms had the R. equi present in soil and feces samples. Soil yielded 75.00% (27/36) positive samples and 66.43% (95/143) of equine feces were positive. The results obtained for pH and OM from the soil had no correlation with the isolation of R. equi from soil samples of the different horse-breeding farms.

SUMMARY The influence of venous blood in the determination ofthe anion gap was studied in 50 adult clinically normal horses in Santa Maria - Brazil. The results (mEq/1) were: Na - 140 ± 2.0; K - 42 ± 0.5; Cl -102 ± 24 and HCO3 - 26.9 ± 2.0. The results were similar but slightly different from those of other authors, but without significam difference, although these authors have used arterial blood. It was concluded that the venous blood can replace the arterial blood in order to determinate the anion gap in horses.

We have determined the in vitro activity of antifungal, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal drugs alone and in combination against seven Conidiobolus lamprauges clinical isolates. The assays were based on the M38-A2 protocol and the checkerboard microdilution method. The lowest inhibitory concentrations were observed for amphotericin B, miconazole (MCZ), terbinafine, and miltefosine (MTF) (MIC range 0.25-1; 2-8; 0.25-2; 2-16xa0μg/ml, respectively). The main synergism observed was through the combination of azithromycin (AZI)+MTF and dapsone (DAP)+MTF (100%), AZI+DAP (85.7%), AZI+MCZ (57.1%) as well as MCZ plus CTX and DAP (42.9%). The in vitro activities suggest that the combination of MTF and AZI or DAP are promising candidate therapies for conidiobolomycosis.

Three ELISA (Enzime-linked immunosorbent assay) tests based on purified capsular antigen from serotypes 3, 5 and 7 of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, prevalent in Brazil, were standardized. Serum samples, collected from piglets inoculated with these three serotypes, were used to standardize the test. In order to study the dynamic of antibody synthesis, weekly blood samples were collected from these piglets. A pool of 130 sera obtained from Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae -free pigs was used as negative control for the tests. The antigens were also tested with serum samples from animals infected with other respiratory infectious agents and vaccinated against athrofic rinitis. The antigens were efficient in detecting animals infected with App. Optical densities above the average of the negative control sera plus four standard deviation were detected. ELISA tests to serotypes 3, 5 and 7 showed specificity of 100% and sensibility of 92, 88 and 90%, respectively. No cross reaction with other serotypes or with sera of animals inoculated with other respiratory pathogens was observed. The results were analyzed using the Statistical Analysis System program. Antigens tested were adequate for serotyping animals previously screened through a polyvalent LPS-LC ELISA test.

Rhodococcus equi seroepidemiological studies were conducted. Sera used were collected from 290 apparently clinically normal mares and foals. The samples originated from 6 horse-breeding farms, located in the county of Bage, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, which had different histories of Rhodococcus equi infections. To correlate the serological results with the presence of the agent in the intestine 123 fecal samples were collected. The synergistic hemolysis inhibition test was used. The test detects antibody against the equi factor. Neutralizing antibodies against the equi factor were verified in 87.93% (255/290) of the animales tested. The geometric mean titer (GMT) of antibodies was higher in the foals when comparad with the mares. The serological results had a correlation with the isolation of R. equi in the feces. The rate of R. equi isolation and GMT titers was higher at the horse-breeding farm where clinical cases were registered. Further studies need to be done to establish the relation among the importance of serological titers and disease detection.

UTILIZAÇÃO DE PAPEL DE FILTRO COMO ALTERNATIVA PARA AVALIAÇÃO DO TESTE DE SCHIRMER EM CÃES

Cláudio Baptista de Carvalho; Alexandre Krause; Paulo Renato dos Santos Costa; Valéria Dutra

In order to evaluated the Schirmer tear test 120 dogs (51 males and 69 females) of different breeds were observed. Four tipes of filter paper were used and prepared in strips of 4cm x 0,5cm. The papers were moisted into the conjuntival sac for one minute, then removed and the umidified segment were measured with a milimetrical rule. The results were analysed by Tukey test. The Melitta filter paper was more effective, and the determined parameters were: 1,4 +/- 1,5mm - KCS; 6,7 +/- 1,0mm - tear hyposecretion; 18,0 +/- 3,4mm -normal secretion and 29,9 +/- 6,7mm - epiphora.
