Water is an essential element to life, and must be available to meet the basic needs of human beings. One of these needs is the production of food, emphasizing the relevance of agribusiness agents in the management of this natural resource. This study discusses how the management of water resources is being conducted by Committees of Watersheds in the State Rio Grande do Sul, focusing on decision making and in social learning. This is an exploratory study, supported by predominantly qualitative analysis. The results showed that the formation of the Committees of Watersheds in the State of Rio Grande do Sul depends on local decisions that are distinct in each region of the State. Evolution in the learning process of the members of the Committees occurs from the existence of conflicts. The conflicts emerge from issues concerning the use of water due to the multiple interests involved and provide discussions and solutions that lead to learning. Decisions taken in the Basin Committees are generally operating and relating to the quantity or quality of water. Social learning is promoted by actions of technical and relational nature offered by the exchange of knowledge and experience among stakeholders and other agents involved.

The protection of geographical indication is considered to be strategic for Brazil. The state of Santa Catarina, especially Goethe Grape Valley, was acknowledged as the first Geographical Indication (GI) to encourage various disciplinary studies, mainly from the view point of law, economy, intellectual property and regional impact. However, there is no evidence in interdisciplinary studies aimed to understand the influence of GIs development with winegrowers and wine producers of this region. Taking these gaps into account, this study intends to check up how the acknowledgement of GI by Goethe Grape Valley Indication of Origin can contribute to creation and development of new competences in wine culture and winemaking. For that purpose, a descriptive, exploratory study with qualitative approach was developed. The creation and change of routines and activities, insertion of new techniques of traceability control, as well as information intending to improve monitoring and control of the origin of each grape in wine barriques was noticed. The authors identified that GI, besides contributing to local development, promotes new competences of winemakers from the very moment of execution of rules and procedures documented in wine production process imposed by Regulatory Council; information-sharing and search for methods that improve their product. One can conclude that geographical indication created new knowledge in production processes and increased winegrowers’ competence level. From the implementation of IPVUG the study allowed a more efficient management of properties and of wineries, because the production volume is controlled, also the place, volume and sampling harvest are traceable. The study also provided a better cost control, which consequently led to more efficient production strategies and wine distribution. Key words: Knowledge management, Knowledge creation, Geographical indication, new competences.

EnglishImportant source of livelihood and food for humans , rice is present in all continents , either in cultivation or in the consumers table . In Brazil , especially in the southern region , this culture has relied on the use of new technology related management , the use of new cultivars that seek to adapt it to the ecological characteristics of each region , as well as the introduction of distinguishing characteristics , such as high productivity , pest resistance , herbicide tolerance , etc. . In this scenario, the objective of this work focuses on the study of the correlation between intellectual property rights protection applied to new cultivars and technological development of a particular sector of agribusiness . For this analysis we selected the paddy sector in the southern state of Santa Catarina . To achieve that goal, we carried out a field survey , through semi-structured interviews with the actors in the rice southern state of Santa Catarina chain to collect primary data regarding the use of these seeds were for growing rice. Additionally , analysis of secondary data obtained from the EPAGRI and EMBRAPA was performed in order to characterize the region and the actors of the rice chain. Based on this set of perceptions , we sought to verify how today is shaped by the use of new cultivars and regional actors such as innovation cultivars may influence this production chain . As a result one can see a high use of protected varieties , which can take proof of the hypothesis to be a correlation between intellectual property and technological development of plants on the paddy sector. There is also the effective increase in production and productivity on the same acreage, which confirms the second hypothesis , that the grant of exclusivity may result in benefits to society . portuguesImportante fonte de sustento e alimentacao para o ser humano, o arroz esta presente em todos os continentes, seja no cultivo ou na mesa do consumidor.
