Starspots are usually associated with the action of magnetic fields at stellar surfaces. However, an inhomogeneous chemical distribution of mercury was found recently for the mercury-manganese (HgMn) star α And - a well-established mem- ber of anon-magnetic subclass of the chemically peculiar stars of the upper main sequence. In this study we present first results of the high-resolution survey of the Hg 3984 A resonance line in the spectra of rapidly rotating HgMn stars with atmospheric parameters similar to those of α And. We use spectrum synthesis modelling and take advantage of the Doppler resolution of stel- lar surfaces to probe the horizontal structure of mercury distribution. Clear signatures of spots are found in the Hg 3984 A line profiles of HR 1185 and HR 8723. Two observations of the latter star separated by two days give evidence for line profile vari- ability. We conclude that inhomogeneous distribution of Hg is a common phenomenon for the rapidly rotating HgMn stars in the 13 000-13 800 K effective temperature range independent of the stellar evolutionary stage. These results establish the existence of a new class of spectrum variable spotted B-type stars. It is suggested that the observed Hg inhomogeneities arise from dynamical instabilities in the chemical diffusion processes and are unrelated to magnetic phenomena.

A total of 85 CP stars of various types are identified among 814 members of the OriOB1 association. The fraction of CP stars decreases with age for different cluster subgroups: from 15.1% in the youngest subgroup (b) to 7.7% in the oldest one (a). Individual comments are provided for each of the 85 stars, where we analyze the physical parameters and distance of the objects. All the 23 Am stars identified as a result of this study are found to have heliocentric distances between 100 and 300 pc and appear not to be members of the OrionOB1 association, but foreground objects. We identified 59 Bp stars, which account for 13.4% of the total number of B-type stars in the association. The fraction of peculiar B-type stars in the OriOB1 association is found to be twice higher than that of peculiar A-type stars. The same is true for field stars. The association contains 22 magnetic stars, out of which 21 are Bp stars and only one is an Ap star. Seventeen of these stars are objects with anomalous helium lines. Magnetic stars show a well-defined tendency to concentrate in the central region of the association (in Orion’s Belt), which contains most of these objects. No significant differences are found between the field strengths in the B-type stars of the association and Bp-type field stars, although there is a noticeable trend for He-rich stars to have stronger fields compared to He-weak stars. We identified 17 binaries, which make up 20% of the total number of peculiar stars studied, which is the standard ratio for CP stars. Except for one HgMn star (HD35548), the radial velocities and proper motions of our identified objects are consistent with the corresponding parameters of normal B-type stars.

The results of a complex study of the chemically peculiar star HD 45583 are reported. Observations were made using the Main Stellar Spectrograph equipped with a circular polarization analyzer and NES echelle spectrograph of the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Our measurements of Zeeman spectra show that the star exhibits unusual variations of the longitudinal component of magnetic field with a secondary minimum. The period of spectral and magnetic variability coincides with the rotation period, which is equal to 1.d177000. Two possible causes of the secondary minimum are discussed: spots with higher than ambient content of some chemical elements on the star’s surface or complex structure of the stellar magnetic field. The parameters of the star’s atmosphere are determined (Teff = 13000 K, log g = 4.0), as well as the abundances of some elements: the star shows a 1–2 dex overabundance of Fe, Si, and Cr, helium is underabundant by about 2 dex with respect to the Sun.

Axial rotation of a star plays an important role in its evolution, physical conditions in its atmosphere and the shape of its spectrum. Methods of determining of v sin i are based on comparison of the observed profiles of spectral lines with the theoretical ones. Their accuracy depends on the type and quality of spectrograms, as well as on the algorithms used. A frequently used method is a simple comparison of one line, e.g. the Ca ii at 3933 Å or Mg ii at 4481 Å. This, however, may result in a false value of v sin i in case when low-dispersion spectra are used. We investigate the spectra of stars with a significant discrepancy of their rotational velocities introduced in various sources, and analyze the corresponding spectral region from the point of view of possible admixed features, which may mask the true line profiles. We use CCD spectra of the stars having this discrepancy, to compare with theoretical spectra. We also studied photographic spectra, obtained during the 1970s and 1980s. In this work we studied the spectra of the binary HD 2913A, and identified the spectrum of its weaker component designated as “Ab”. We estimated the effective temperature, surface gravity and projected rotational velocity of the weaker component that classify it as an early F-type Main Sequence star. The discrepancy between the values of v sin i derived from the two lines of calcium and magnesium is explained as a consequence of superposition of the pair’s spectra. The cooler component contributes by a strong Ca ii-K line, and thus significantly broadens the observed line profile.

Axial rotation of a star plays an important role in its evolution, physical condition in its atmosphere and appearance of its spectrum. Methods of determinations of υ sin i are based on comparison of the observed profiles of spectral lines with theoretical ones. Their accuracy depends on the kind and quality of spectrograms as well as on the algorithms used. A frequently used method is the simple comparing of one line, e.g. the Ca II at 3933 Å or Mg ii at 4481 Å. This however, may result in a false value of υ sin i if low dispersion spectra are used. In this work we studied contemporary CCD as well as older photographic spectra of the multiple star HD90569. We determined the projected rotational velocity value to be υ sin i = 11 km/s. Besides formerly reported enhancing of lines of Cr, Fe, Mn and Sr, we found also large overabundances of rare earths, gallium and platinum. Helium, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, aluminium, calcium, scandium and nickel are in deficit. The spectrum of the occultation double was not identified to be of the SB2-type, however, there are some observable evidences that the pair creates a binary with a long orbital period. Despite this there are also observations that leave such interpretation uncertain.

Context. The existence of a significant population of Ap stars with very long rotation periods (up to several hundred years) has progressively emerged over the past two decades. However, only lower limits of the periods are known for most of them because their variations have not yet been observed over a sufficient timebase. Aims. We determine the rotation period of the slowly rotating Ap star HD 18078 and we derive constraints on the geometrical structure of its magnetic field. Methods. We combine measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus obtained from 1990 to 1997 with determinations of the mean longitudinal magnetic field spanning the 1999-2007 time interval to derive an unambiguous value of the rotation period. We show that this value is consistent with photometric variations recorded in the Stroemgren uvby photometric system between 1995 and 2004. We fit the variations of the two above-mentioned field moments with a simple model to constrain the magnetic structure. Results. The rotation period of HD 18078 is (1358 +/- 12) d. The geometrical structure of its magnetic field is consistent to first order with a colinear multipole model whose axis is offset from the centre of the star. Conclusions. HD 18078 is only the fifth Ap star with a rotation period longer than 1000 days for which the exact value of that period (as opposed to a lower limit) could be determined. The strong anharmonicity of the variations of its mean longitudinal magnetic field and the shift between their extrema and those of the mean magnetic field modulus are exceptional and indicative of a very unusual magnetic structure.

Axial rotation of a star plays an important role in its evolution, physical conditions in its atmosphere, and appearance of its spectrum. We have analyzed CCD spectra of three stars for which their projected rotational velocity remarkably differs when derived from the Ca II λ 3933 Å and MgII λ 4481 Å lines. We derived effective temperatures and surface gravities using published uvbyβ photometries and computed synthetic spectra. Comparing observed line profiles of the two lines with the computed ones, we estimated values of v sin i. We also derived radial velocities by means of the cross-correlation function. HD8837 is known to be a shell star with pronounced narrow absorption cores in the Balmer lines as well as in the strong metal lines; however, we do not confirm the emission component in the core of Hβ. HD47964 has been discovered by Hipparcos to be a double. However, in our spectra we do not find traces of the other star. Based on the Hipparcos data, we estimated that the other star would be a main sequence A4 star with an extremely high rotational velocity resulting in wiping out any traces of spectral lines of the companion. HD183986 is known to be a triple star. However, we have found a manifestation of a so far not discovered companion of the component HD183986A and estimated it as a main sequence A5 star having v sin i of about 150 km/s.

We make a comparative analysis of magnetic fields and rotation parameters of magnetic CP stars with strong and weak anomalies in the spectral energy distribution. Stars with strong depressions in the continuum at 5200 Å are shown to have significantly stronger fields (the mean longitudinal component of the fields of these stars is 〈Be〉 = 1341 ± 98 G) compared to objects with weaker depressions (〈Be〉 = 645 ± 58 G). Stars with stronger depressions are also found to occur more commonly among slow rotators. Their rotation periods are, on the average, about 10 days long, three times longer than these of stars with weak depressions (about three days). This fact is indicative of a decrease of the degree of anomality of the magnetic stars continuum spectrum with increasing rotational velocity. Yet another proof has been obtained suggesting that slow rotation is one of the crucial factors contributing to the development of the phenomenon of magnetic chemically peculiar stars.Magnetic CP stars with weak depressions at 5200 Å are intermediate objects between stars with strong depressions and normal A- and B-type stars both in terms of field strength and rotational velocity.

We present the results of our abundance analysis for the magnetic chemically peculiar star HD 115708 based on high-resolution spectra. The atmospheric chemical composition of HD 115708 (Teff = 7550 K) is shown to be typical of cool Ap stars with a significant ionization disequilibrium for the first and second rare earth ions, which is commonly observed in the atmospheres of pulsating Ap (roAp) stars. Our study of the vertical distribution of elements has shown that Mg, Ca, Cr, and Fe concentrate in deeper atmospheric layers, with their abundances decreasing sharply in the upper layers. The jumps in abundance are 1.5–3 orders of magnitude. Silicon is distributed in depth almost uniformly in the atmosphere of HD 115708. The derived empirical Cr and Fe distributions agree qualitatively with the results of diffusion calculations. Since the atmospheric chemical peculiarities in HD 115708 correspond to roAp stars, we have performed a spectroscopic monitoring to find nonradial pulsations. We have been able to determine only an upper limit for the amplitude of the possible radial velocity pulsations, ∼100 m s−1, due to the insufficient temporal resolution and instability of the main stellar spectrograph (MSS) of the 6-m telescope.
