The paper explores the requirements and support systems for agile planning processes. It reviews therefore traditional planning processes and proposes a new model based on agile principles. The novel planning model is employed to frame a component-based planning approach and its application in a planning manual.

The paper explores the impact of physical learning objects and learning styles on flow and learning outcomes in industrial engineering education. Learning is conceptualized with the theory of experiential learning. Comparitive case studies yield data involving more than 100 students since 2009. The findings provide a strong argument for utilizing physical objects in education consistent with construtionist theory. It is futhermore found that flow may have negative impact on the learning scope.

It has a need to meet the demands of individual customers and solve the problems in current production caused by changing of the markets and the global influence and general competition situation. Utilization of the progress achieved in the information and communication technologies are expected in the future for many manufacturing companies. This leads to the increasing and consistent integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into the production systems in smaller and smaller subsystems and components. Cyber-Physical System will be more and more involved in production systems. Mechatronic systems become cyber-physical systems through additional communication skills and autonomy in behavior on external influences and internally stored settings. In the Cyber-Physical Production System, the horizontal integration through value networks and the vertical integration through networked manufacturing systems can be built to realize smart factory and smart production. In a laboratory environment at the Experimental and Digital Factory at the Chemnitz University of Technology, an innovative logistical system is built up to apply the horizontal and vertical integration into practice for research investigations. A research question to be answered is how the communication between components in this system related to the horizontal and vertical integration can be implemented. The other issue is how to test the integration and the functionalities.

Abstract The learning model(s) used in IE curricula are decisive for the intended development of competences in IE disciplines and methods. Aside from academic learning models the approach of experiential learning seems to be beneficial because participants get involved into a task, methods applied to concrete objects in a (nearly) real environment and there is immediate feedback on decisions and behaviour. In the paper, we describe an approach how experiential learning can be integrated in the discipline of production systems and factory (layout) planning at a very early stage. An accompanying research approach was designed to get insight into planning and learning processes. The gathered data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential methods. The analysis intended to answer the main questions: Do the experimental design and the early integration enhance students understanding and practical utilization skills of planning methods? As a result, we got insight in learning and team processes and in the correlations between characteristics of the individual, the team, the task and the situation. This knowledge can be used for the enrichment of IE curricula with experiential learning settings.

Production planning and control fulfill a crucial role in enterprises. Planning and scheduling activities are very complex, and take place within the enterprise and across the entire supply chain in order to achieve high quality products at lower cost, lower inventory and higher levels of customer service. Since the information that has to be processed in planning and scheduling functions is very complex information technology is used extensively to support these functions. In the field of manufacturing planning and control Decision Support Systems (DSS) are used. Those are also known as Advanced Planning Systems (APS).

This paper outlines a method to structure a construction kit system for assembly and manufacturing systems in a way, that a realised system from those building blocks fulfils the requirement of ease in reconfiguration considering specified change criteria (i.e. variants, capacity) at an adequate degree. An overview regarding the major engineering domains and applicable literature is given. The basic flow in this method is given and important steps described. This paper finishes with describing further steps for finalizing the method.
