Analysis of public transport service improvements on tram network in the City of Zagreb

Dino Šojat; Davor Brčić; Marko Slavulj

Original scientific paper As a mass transit mode, public transport represents the backbone of sustainable urban mobility in highly-populated cities. In order to achieve modal shift from private car to public transport among city trips, transit service has to be attractive for passengers. In this manner, the operating speed, which highly depends on public transport priority, becomes an important indicator of public transport attractiveness. The tram priority research conducted in this paper is based on the available public transport data for the tram network of the City of Zagreb, such that two hypothetical tram priority scenarios were set. The results, in form of operating speed increase and savings in passenger spaces, show the possibilities for improvements while the operating capacity remains the same; all this is impacting the passenger travel time and costs for the operator as well as the local community of the City of Zagreb.

Estimation of urban mobility using public mobile network

Krešimir Vidović; Sadko Mandzuka; Davor Brčić

Urban mobility of the population is usually estimated using procedures focused on specific domains (transport, logistics, environment, society, etc.), Using the limited sets of domain related data and indicators related to targeted subsets of the total urban population (users of public transport, cyclists, drivers, etc.). The paper proposes a new approach for estimating the urban mobility of population based on data on telecommunication activities (voice calls, text messaging, Internet access) of users in public telecommunications networks. The paper describes the procedure for determination of indicators of urban mobility (number of trips, travel time, distance), and their values is obtained by analyzing a subset of data from mobile phone operators Call Data Records database. The presented method provides an estimate of the movement of users in order to estimate urban mobility by forming an origin destination matrix, travel time matrix and distance matrices between the respective zones. The new model for integrating urban mobility indicators into urban mobility index is proposed, by utilizing an expert system based on fuzzy-logic ANFIS method.

Analytic determination of reference passenger car size for parking space dimensioning in Croatia

Davor Brčić; Marko Šoštarić; Marko Ševrović

Dimensions of parking spaces have been subject to standardization in recent decades in the world. Different state institutions and standardization committees regulated parking space sizes based on typical passenger car size and ergonomic conditions. Most of these regulations are not following the notable growth in size of passenger cars that has been the case in the past 30 years. In that period in Croatia, a significant increase was also observed in the number of passenger cars in mid-sized and large passenger car classes thus emphasising the problem of outdated and inadequate parking space dimension standard. In this paper an analytic procedure is presented that takes into account the number and types of passenger cars registered in Croatia that leads to the determination of reference passenger car size. This reference values, as well as other relevant ergonomic standards are used to calculate the recommended parking space dimensions in Croatia. The purpose of this analysis is to produce new recommendations and suggest new design standards for parking spaces in Croatia as well as to provide analytic procedures to conduct similar researches in other areas.
