The text analyzes a founder category of psychology - the “ individual “ -, privileging a historical contribution. Firstly, recognizing the ideological effects of the individual’s representation as value, in the ambit of the modern western culture, it analyzes the formation of that subjectivity individualized in the modernity, with the definition of some basic characteristics that gave it outline and density. It presents the modernity as a specific moment of hegemony of the individualistic ideology, through the implantation of political institutions, increasingly committed with the values of freedom and equality, or as global cultural space of their statement. It discusses the processes that have been marking individual’s concept in this century, its consolidation in the organized capitalism and, more recently, in the neoliberalism, highlighting the impoverishment of the civic life and the development of a narcissistic culture.

The present work discusses the repercution of the increasing depreciative speech towards the civil servant - greatly influenced by changes in the labor world at the turning of the century - in the subjectivity in this category. It also discusses how these workers deal with the frequently negative stereotypes that diminish and deppreciate their labor and explains how the lack of recognition and appreciation interferes in the sense given by civil servants to their professional life. An analysis of the changes in the public sector management over the last decade is also provided, with special emphasis on the consequences of the implementation of the 1995 Brazilian State Reform. The work concludes that the current global Welfare State crisis, translated as the pressure for a lean government body affects significantly the environment of Brazilian politics and the organization and ethos of its public institutions. The work identifies a new scenario that generates significant impacts on the production of subjectivity in the category. Finally, it questions whether there is place for the public servant in the world of contemporary work.

The text aims to analyze and to discuss the ways in which youngsters, nowadays, have been constructing ways, narratives and life projects from the new configurations assumed by work. It presents, initially, the central theoretical conceptions that guided the research: the contemporary life, the changes in the work environment, the youth and its life projects. It then displays the empirical study conducted through semi-directed interviews, with high middle class youngsters from Rio de Janeiro, university students and trainees in a big company from the same city, whose testimonials were analyzed by the content analysis and discourse analysis. Finally, the text presents and analyzes the main themes found in the testimonials: (1) the perceptions and experiences related by the interviewed subjects on the period they were trainees, which referred, in a direct or indirect way, to an apprenticeship of personal construction and/or adequacy to a particular “profile” valued and recognized in the current labour market, (2) the “contacts”, that emerge as facilitators for the insertion and permanence in the labour market and (3) the approach of entrance into adult life and the conception of future presented by the youngsters as a mosaic of possibilities, that was based, in fact, in a conception of “prolonged present”.
