Formal Synthesis in Circuit Design - A Classification and Survey

Ramayya Kumar; Christian Blumenröhr; Dirk Eisenbiegler; Detlef Schmid

This article gives a survey on different methods of formal synthesis. We define what we mean by the term formal synthesis and delimit it from the other formal methods that can also be used to guarantee the correctness of an implementation. A possible classification scheme for formal synthesis methods is then introduced, based on which some significant research activities are classified and summarized. We also briefly introduce our own approach towards the formal synthesis of hardware. Finally, we compare these approaches from different points of view.

On the efficiency of formal synthesis-experimental results

Christian Blumenröhr; Dirk Eisenbiegler; Detlef Schmid

Formal synthesis has become an interesting alternative to postsynthesis verification. Formal synthesis means integrating formal validation within the synthesis process by performing synthesis via rule applications. The practical applicability of formal synthesis very much depends on the efficiency of the underlying rules. This paper gives a case study about the complexity of formal synthesis programs. Experiments with two realistic-sized benchmark circuits were performed using the formal synthesis system HASH. HASH provides means for representing and transforming circuits in a secure and logically sound manner. Furthermore, arbitrary synthesis procedures can be invoked to achieve high quality of designs. In this paper, the implementation of a formal scheduling step is used to illustrate efficiency considerations related to formal synthesis.

Automatischer Entwurf hochintegrierter Schaltungen aus Beschreibungen der Schaltungsfunktion

Detlef Schmid; Raul Camposano; Wolfgang Rosenstiel

Detlef Schmid; Manfred Broy

VLSI Top-Down Design for Students of Computer Science — A Practical Course

Detlef Schmid

In this section a practical course on advanced methods of top-down hardware design is presented. The course is offered at the Computer Science Department at the University of Karlsruhe. It focuses on hardware modelling with VHDL and synthesis with the professional CAD tool set of Synopsys [1]. The topics of several practical lessons cover various hardware applications including neural networks and test controllers.

DFG-Schwerpunktprogramm: „Entwurf und Entwurfsmethodik eingebetteter Systeme“

Kurt J. Antreich; Franz J. Rammig; Wolfgang Rosenstiel; Detlef Schmid; Klaus Waldschmidt

Design of Integrated Systems

Detlef Schmid

The efficient and fault-free design of highly complex integrated systems is becoming more and more an important factor in increasing the use of ASICs (Application Specific Integrated Circuits) in an industrial environment. The possibility of an easy design of such ASICs, coupled with the rapid progress in IC technology, will definitely open up the multi-faceted use of ASICs within the industry. At present the normal design techniques quickly reach their limits when complex circuits need to be designed. They can deliver optimal designs within a short design cycle time only in rare cases. In order to overcome the complexity factor, it is necessary to use powerful CAD (Computer Aided Design) techniques and tools, and automate a large part of the design process. This automation would relieve the designer and also allow unskilled IC designers to design complex systems in actual technologies.

The Performance of Small Cache Memories in Minicomputer Systems with Several Processors

Axel Lehmann; Detlef Schmid

The evolution of the last years has shown that with improving technological possibilities, concepts of cache and hierarchical memories must be taken into consideration also for minicomputer systems [2, 8, 10]. As well-known, the system performance critically depends on placing the addressed data at the time of memory access in the cache, as the memory level being next to the processor. Therefore, size and structure of the cache, as well as the organizing strategies are of decisive importance [2, 3, 4, 7, 8].
