In this paper, we study on the vehicular wireless basestation for in-vehicle wireless sensor network system. We introduce in-vehicle wireless sensor network system applying wireless sensor network technologies. The in-vehicle wireless sensor network system greatly consists of the vehicular wireless base-station, vehicular wireless sensor nodes, and wireless OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) module. Here, we describe the vehicular wireless base-station as sub-system of in-vehicle wireless sensor network system. The vehicular wireless base-station carries out roles which process ECU (Electronics Control Unit) information obtained from wireless OBD module and sensor information received from a number of vehicular wireless sensor nodes.

In this paper, we study on the architecture of the in-vehicle wireless sensor network system. We present the system architecture which will be applied to the convenience/safety-related services by using wireless sensor networks applied to the in-vehicle system. This system architecture aims to compose an efficient vehicle system and reduce the increased vehicle weight by the in-vehicle sensors and ECUs(Electronics Control Unit). We describe the system architecture about a vehicular basestation and a vehicular wireless sensor node which is installable randomly to the in-vehicle electronic components.

This paper designs and develops the communication interface between base-station and user device (e.g., smart-phone, smart-pad) which are components of the wireless automotive sensor network system. The wireless automotive sensor network system provides a variety of driver assistance information for drivers by using wireless sensor network technologies. The communication interfaces are needed to provide driver assistance information through the user device. This communication interfaces have a basic message format and consists of the command, state, ACK (acknowledgment), and data message formats according to message type. The base-station transmits a variety of sensor and vehicle information by the command message transmitted from the user device. Drivers are provided with various driver assistance services (e.g., tire pressure monitoring, parking assistance, air conditioner service) by using these communication interfaces. The communication interfaces are applied to wireless parking assistance system to verify usefulness and effectiveness of these communication interfaces.

In this paper, we develop the components which can get the eco-driving and safe-driving information using various vehicle information as a detail development of Vehicle-IT Convergence Platform by Android platform based mobile devices (e.g., smartphone, tablet). These components use vehicle information (e.g., vehicle mileage information, sensor data) for analyzing the eco-driving and safe-driving information. The vehicle information is gotten through CAN (Controller Area Network) that is inner vehicle network protocol. The vehicle information which is collected by an OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) communication module is transferred to a mobile device through a bluetooth network. The vehicle drivers can change the wrong driving styles and behaviors for themselves as they check eco-driving and safe-driving information these components provide. Through reusing the Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) provided by the eco-driving and safe-driving components, vehicle-IT related companies can develop various mobile service applications more easily and quickly.

This paper presents an parking assistance system based on wireless sensor networks technology to reduce the wire harness in vehicle. This wireless sensor networks system consists of two types of sensor nodes which one measures the distance using ultrasonic sensor and another monitors the ECU information from OBD. Sensor node for measuring distance to obstacles operates the detection process twice with changing the length of generated ultrasonic waves to cover the wide detection range. Data obtained by sensor nodes is sent to base-station by wireless links based on Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) protocol. Evaluation tests show the high rate of packet sending and receiving between base-station and sensor nodes. Also, sensor nodes containing ultrasonic sensor satisfied the detection range of 30 cm to 120 cm.
