Studies Regarding the Influence of Exhaust Backpressure on the Performances of a Compression Ignited Engine

Nicolae Vlad Burnete; Dan Moldovanu; Doru Laurean Baldean; Levente Botond Kocsis

This paper presents some of the researches made on a compression ignited engine, in order to establish the influence of the exhaust backpressure (that can be caused by the existence or clogging of the catalytic converter, or by the SCR catalyst or the particle filter or by the noise reduction tubing itself) on the performances of a CI engine. The research was made on a ultramodern test bed inside the TestEcoCel Laboratory (Test, Research and Certification of Internal Combustion Engines) that work on biodiesel, of the Automotive and Transport Department, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. Graphs, values and results were obtained through experimental measurements on the test bed and evaluated using specific software.

Contributions in Experimental Research Concerning Diesel Fuel Supply and Lubrication in the Case of Comparative Study Between Euro V and IV Common Rail Engines

Doru Laurean Baldean; Mihai Aurel Crișan; Adela Ioana Borzan

The fuel efficiency and engine durability, besides the taxes added to pollution, are nowadays some of the most important concerns in the mind of vehicle owners. Lubrication and fuel consumption influences the pollution level. Engine’s operating temperature, load, and speed, and fuel injected quantity, affect the output performances. The present work outlines the research results regarding the innovative methods for fuel consumption measurements in diesel engines with electronic control module. The modern cars have more than one electronic system for engine control, on-board data management and other operating features. In order to efficiently use all the available data first they have to be monitored. Optimizing the fuel consumption and engine thermal efficiency, as well as the reduction of friction forces due to a better lubrication is a desirable goal for the majority of motor vehicle’s owners and engineers. Improving the fuel economy leads to a financial supplementary gain.

Limits and specific disadvantages of using the conventional fossil fuels, as well as their high price for the individual customer and the environmental impact of their incomplete combustion are some of the main reasons for taking new steps in research and development of new recipes, materials and methods regarding the fuel supply for internal combustion engines. The present paper encompass the research developed at Automotive Engineering and Transports Department in Technical University from Cluj-Napoca regarding the innovative possibilities for biofuel supply in compression ignited engines by a fumigation method on a laboratory engine test bed. There were recorded and studied the engine speed, torque variation at different operating regimes. The obtained results from the conducted research are analyzed and discussed in close detail. The bio-fuel fumigation method is compatible with the available diesel engine and has a positive effect upon few behavior features in testing operation.

Research of some operating parameters and the emissions level variation in a spark ignited engine through on-board investigation methods in different loading conditions

Ferenti Iosif; Doru Laurean Baldean

The present paper shows research made on a spark ignited engine with port fuel injection in different operation conditions in order to improve the comprehension about the cold start sequence, acceleration when changing the gear ratios, quality of combustion process and also any measures to be taken for pollutant reduction in such cases. The engineering endeavor encompasses the pollutants investigation during the operation time of gasoline supplied engine with four inline cylinders in different conditions. The temperature and any other parameters were measured with specific sensors installed on the engine or in the exhaust pipes. All the data collected has been evaluated using electronic investigation systems and highly developed equipment. In this manner it has enabled the outline of the idea of how pollutants of engine vary in different operating conditions. Air quality in the everyday environment is very important for the human health, and thus the ambient air quality has a well-known importance in the European pollution standards and legislation. The high level of attention directed to the pollution problem in the European lifestyle is a driving force for all kinds of studies in the field of the reduction of engine emission.
