Abstract Lemna valdiviana Phil. and L. minuta Kunth are native species of the Americas. At present L. minuta colonizes in Europa and Asia, where it is often considered an invasive alien species. Recent floristic surveys in the Agro Pontino area (Lazio region, central Italy) allowed to find a population referring to L. valdiviana, supported by the recent gathering in Sardegna region. With the aim to identify correctly the two species, we carried out a morphometric study based on measurements of both qualitative and quantitative characters, made on herbarium and living specimens collected from America and Europe. The univariate and multivariate analyses clearly support the attribution of the population from Lazio to L. valdiviana. This gathering is the first record of this species for the Italian peninsula. Moreover, the checking of Herbaria allowed us to find the older specimen of L. minuta collected in Europe (around 1877). At present L. valdiviana is to be considered as a casual alien species in Agro Pontino, but the rapid colonization of the aquatic environments by Lemna species by means of vegetative reproduction allows us to recognize it as a potential invasive species.

Abstract An updated inventory of the native vascular flora of Italy, providing details on the occurrence at regional level, is presented. The checklist includes 8195 taxa (6417 species and 1778 subspecies), distributed in 1092 genera and 152 families; 23 taxa are lycophytes, 108 ferns and fern allies, 30 gymnosperms and 8034 angiosperms. The taxa currently occurring in Italy are 7483, while 568 taxa have not been confirmed in recent times, 99 are doubtfully occurring in the country and 19 are data deficient. Out of the 568 not confirmed taxa, 26 are considered extinct or possibly extinct.

Original material of the four Senecio taxa described by A. Bertoloni has been examined, and the typification of their names is discussed. A specimen from the Monti Herbarium (kept in BOLO) and iconographies from Bonanni and Bertoloni are designated as lectotypes, whereas another specimen from the Monti Herbarium is selected as neotype. The nomenclature of the names Senecio erucifolius L., Senecio tenuifolius Jacq., Senecio delphinifolius Vahl and Senecio rupestris Waldst. & Kit. is also analysed. The names S. crinitus Bertol. and S. laciniatus Bertol. belong to S. delphinifolius [now Jacobaea delphinifolia (Vahl) Pelser & Veldkamp] and S. rupestris [now Senecio squalidus subsp. rupestris (Waldst. & Kit.) Greuter], respectively, whereas S. erraticus Bertol. and S. praealtus Bertol. are accepted as separate taxa as Jacobaea erratica (Bertol.) Fourr. and Jacobaea erucifolia subsp. praealta (Bertol.) Greuter & B.Nord., respectively.

Arenaria bertolonii Fiori & Paol. is an orophyte and endemic European species of Italy and France. The name Stellaria saxifraga Bertol. (basionym of A. bertolonii) is typified on a herbarium specimen kept in BOLO. Infraspecific variability of the species is discussed and a comparison with related taxa included in the Subg. Arenaria was made on the basis of morphological analyses and chorological and cytological data. At the sectional level, the results show that A. bertolonii is clearly separate from the morphological and chorological points of view, thus supporting the proposal for a new monotypic section (Sect. Italiae Iamonico) of central Mediterranean species. The analysis of infraspecific variability instead highlighted overlapping morphological characteristics; the distribution areas of the infraspecific taxa are sympatric and any cytological difference is lacking, thus pointing to a synonymization of the names. Notes on the ecology and distribution of A. bertolonii are also provided.

Dysphania Anthelmintica (Amaranthaceae), New to the Non-Native Flora of Italy, and Taxonomic Considerations on the Related Species Dysphania anthelmintica is recorded for the first time for Italy (Lazio region). Morphological and ecological characteristics of this plant and its invasive status, as compared with those of Dysphania ambrodioides and Chenopodium suffruticosum, are presented and discussed. Taxonomical notes are also provided. Na ozemlju Italije (območje Lazio) smo prvič zabeležili vrsto Dysphania anthelmintica. Obravnavali smo morfološke in ekološke značilnosti te vrste in njen invazivni status v primerjavi z vrstama Dysphania ambrodioides in Chenopodium suffruticosum. Predstavili smo tudi taksonomske opombe.

Abstract: The typification of the name Kochia saxicola Guss. [= Eokochia saxicola (Guss.) Freitag & G. Kadereit] (Chenopodiaceae) is here discussed, and a specimen from the Gussone collection (NAP) is designated as the lectotype. The distribution of the species is given and remarks on its IUCN conservation status are provided.

A taxonomic revision of the genus Alternanthera (Amaranthaceae) in Italy is here presented. Field surveys were carried out during the period 2007–2013. Thirty-six herbaria (both European and American) were consulted as well as extensive literature was analyzed. Four taxa are recognized, all of them to be considered aliens native to South America. Information about nomenclature (accepted names, main synonyms, and types), morphology, chromosome number, alien status (at national and regional levels), occurrence in Italy (at regional and provincial scale), ecology (preferential habitat, phenology, and elevation), taxonomical notes, and Italian vernacular names were provided for each taxon. A diagnostic key was given. For the nomenclatural purposes the generic name Alternanthera and its type was discussed, and the names A. paronychioides and A. pungens were studied and typified (lecto- and neotype, respectively) on specimens preserved at PH and P.

The application of sixteen names in Acnida, Amaranthus and Euxolus that are linked to Italian flora has been studied. One new combination (Am. emarginatus subsp. emarginatus var. pseudogracilis) is proposed here. Am. strictus is a nomen nudum, and its concept was investigated on the basis of a specimen collected by M. Tenore and preserved in NAP. The name Am. × monteluccii is a nom. inval. and it is validated here. The remaining 14 names are valid from the nomenclatural point of view, and they were typified on specimens kept in B, BM, BOLO, FI, G, K, MO, NY, P, PH, US and iconographies by Dodonaei (for Am. ascendens) and Balbis (for Am. prostratus).

Abstract The taxonomy of complicated native African taxa, Biscutella maritima (Brassicaceae) and annual species of Sesuvium (Aizoaceae) is discussed. The distribution of B. maritima is widened to the most of the coastal areas of NE Algeria and N Tunisia. Morphological differences with regard to other North African members of Biscutella ser. Biscutella are reported to facilitate the identification of B. maritima. We propose to accept four annual Sesuvium species (instead of the one previously accepted species, S. sesuvioides sensu amplissimo) with different distributions in Africa: S. digynum, S. hydaspicum, S. sesuvioides s.str. and S. nyasicum. A delimitation key based on morphological and carpological characters is provided. Lectotypes of S. digynum, S. digynum var. angustifolium, S. hydaspicum, S. nyasicum, Diplochonium sesuvioides (Sesuvium sesuvioides) and Trianthema polysperma (synonym of Sesuvium hydaspicum) are selected. Other discussed taxa belong to the alien elements of the flora. Atriplex semibaccata (Amaranthaceae-Chenopodiaceae) is reported as a new species for Cape Verde. Gaillardia × grandiflora (Asteraceae) is discovered as a new species for Africa found in Morocco. Prosopis velutina (Fabaceae) is collected for the first time in Northern Africa (Morocco). Mollugo verticillata (Molluginaceae) is recorded as a new species for DR Congo. Its morphology, including seed ornamentation, is discussed in reference to other similar-looking Molluginaceae. Incidence of American species Heterotheca subaxillaris (Asteraceae) in North Africa is discussed. Vernonanthura polyanthes (Asteraceae) is recorded as a naturalized invasive species in eastern Zimbabwe. It seems to be the first documented discovery of this ergasiophyte in Africa.
