Abstract Chemical effects on enhancement of Coster–Kronig transition of L3 X-rays of Hg, Pb and Bi compounds were measured for these elements and their compounds. The samples were excited by gamma rays with energy 59.5 keV from an 241Am radioisotope source. L X-rays emitted by samples were counted by a Si(Li) detector with resolution 155 eV at 5.9 keV . The data were carefully analysed and chemical effects on enhancement of Coster–Kronig transition of L3 X-rays were determined.

Abstract Kα and Kβ X-ray fluorescence cross-sections and the Kβ / Kα intensity ratios were experimentally determined for elements in the range 22⩽ Z ⩽29 by 10 keV photons using secondary excitation method. K X-rays emitted by samples were counted by a Si(Li) detector with resolution 160 eV at 5.9 keV . Obtained values were compared with the calculated values. The experimental values for all the elements were in good agreement with the calculated values.

The Kα/Kβ intensity ratios for Ti, V and Cr in halogen (F and Cl) compounds were investigated. Measurements were carried out at ten different energies in the 5.5-12.1 keV interval by using the secondary excitation method. K X-rays emitted by the samples were counted by a Si(Li) detector with a resolution of 160 eV at 5.9 keV. It was observed that the measured values are getting closer to the theoretical values with increasing excitation energy. Values obtained were compared with the theoretical ones for pure elements.

Detailed interpretation of data obtained from X-ray transmission measurements usually depends on the assumption that the contribution of each element is additive. This assumption yields the mixture rule for X-ray attenuation coefficients which is valid if molecular and chemical effects are negligible. We measured the total mass attenuation coefficients of V, Cr, Mn, Co and Ni in various their compounds. Absorption corrections were carried on data for ligands in the compounds. We found that V, Cr, Mn, Co and Ni have different total mass attenuation coefficients in the different compounds. We compared our results with theoretical values of Hubbell and Seltzer.

Abstract The photon-induced K X-ray fluorescence cross-sections (σKα,σKβ) for Ti, V and Cr in halogens (F and Cl) compounds were investigated. Measurements were carried out at 10 different energies in the interval 5.5– 12.1 keV by using secondary excitation method. K X-rays emitted by samples were counted by a Si(Li) detector with resolution 160 eV at 5.9 keV . Obtained values were compared with the theoretical values of pure elements.

Abstract K fluorescence yields were measured for I and Br compounds. The samples were excited by γ-rays 59.5 keV produced by a Am-241 radioisotope source. The K X-rays emitted by the samples were counted using a Si(Li) detector with a resolution of 155 eV at 5.9 keV . Experimental results were compared with the theoretical values of Br and I elements.

Chemical effects on the average L shell fluorescence yields (vL) for Ba, La and Ce compounds were investigated. Samples were excited by gamma-rays with 59.5 keV energy photons from a 241Am radioisotope source. L X-rays emitted by samples were counted by a Si(Li) detector with a resolution 155 eV at 5.9 keV. Chemical effects on the average L shell fluorescence yield (vL) for Ba, La and Ce compounds were observed. The values are compared with theoretical and experimental ones for the pure elements.

The Kα to Lα and Kβ to Lβ intensity ratios of seven elements have been measured following photoionization at 59.5 keV by using a Si (Li) detector (FWHM=155 eV at 5.96 keV). The intensity ratios were determined by measuring K and L x-rays emitted from a standard target of a given element. The theoretical values of the Kα to Lα and Kβ to Lβ intensity ratios were calculated using theoretically tabulated values of shell/subshell photoionization cross sections, fluorescence yields, Coster-Kronig transition probabilities, and radiative decay rates for ηKLi≠ and ηKLi=0. The measured values are in good agreement with theoretical results.

Abstract K X-ray fluorescence cross-sections were experimentally determined for elements in the range 22 ≤ Z ≤ 29 at various energies using secondary excitation method. K X-rays emitted by samples were counted by a Si(Li) detector with resolution 160 eV at 5.9 keV. Obtained values were compared with the calculated values. The experimental values are systematically higher than the theoretical values.
