Analytic hierarchy prioritisation of new product development activities for electronics manufacturing

Eduardo Gomes Salgado; Valério Antonio Pamplona Salomon; Carlos Henrique Pereira Mello

New product development (NPD) is a managerial process, performed by many activities. The purpose of this paper is to present the application of the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to prioritise activities of NPD for manufacturing companies of electronic products. Mathematical modelling was the research method adopted. An electronics cluster located in the southeast region of Brazil was studied. Therefore, 10 of the 42 activities from an NPD model were suggested to be excluded for the electronics companies. These activities have less than 0.5% overall priority. The results from the AHP application were welcomed by the companies’ NPD experts.

As a reason for competitiveness, the process of product development evolves using, in some situations, improvement methods, e.g. design for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA). In the framework of the product development process, it is desirable that engineers and managers have a systemic view of the effects that changes in local processes will have on the overall performance of the entire production system. This vision of such effects can be achieved with computer simulation. This study aims at assessing how DFMA can be integrated with computer simulation and the benefits from the alternatives identified by such method during production and assembly. Using the electronic voting machine printer as object of study, options to improve design by means of DFMA principles are identified. Five models were developed to represent the current assembly process and two models following the implementation of the changes proposed by the DFMA. The sale price is confidential (exclusive product of the Brazilian government). The company provided data in assembly costs. The results show the production increase in assembly time (9.94%) and average daily sales (

The ISO 14001 standard is a reference to direct the implementation of Environmental Management Systems. The number of organizations that have adopted the certification has been growing over the years. This study aimed to evaluate the evolution of ISO 14001 in the Americas and among its economic sectors. A descriptive analysis of ISO 14001 data for the years 1996–2014, obtained from ISO and literature review, were performed. The evolution of ISO 14001 was also compared with the ISO 9001. The results showed that the number of ISO 14001 certifications has regularly increased on the continent as a whole, but unevenly among its countries. The number of ISO 9001 certifications still remains higher than the ISO 14001, but the disparity between them is decreasing, at the country level. The paper contributes insights into the main literature to be addressed for business managers, certifying bodies and specialists.

The ISO 9001 standard is considered as an effective tool to support a quality management system (QMS). A steady growth in the number of ISO 9001 issued certificates is observed worldwide, confirming the interest of companies in this approach. However, information regarding this behaviour over time in the American Continent is scarce. This paper presents a set of qualitative and quantitative analyses related to the ISO 9001 certification (globally and at the country level of the Americas), the use of this standard in countries that were part of the ISO Survey 2011 and modelling the ISO 9001 certification for American countries, in order to characterise through mathematical models, the evolution of the certification process and to identify factors that influence the ISO 9001 issued certificates in the various countries analysed. Based on the work developed, a positive relationship was found between the number of issued certificates in each country per 1000 inhabitants and the indicators of economic development (Gross National Income Per Capita). It is determined that the total reserves of a country is an economic variable that directly affects the number of issued certificates, a finding not observed in other forecasting models.

This study aims to identify, analyze and prioritize the factors or areas that when well managed produce favorable results in the software development process using the method of decision making Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Ranking the top five factors are: Plan and Project Schedule (6.47 per cent), Customer Engagement (5.96 per cent), Defining the Methodology for Development (4.43 per cent), Commitment and Motivation (4.10 per cent) and Mission Project (4.09 per cent). Given the difficulty in finding a tool to support the development of this work was proposed and developed a web system. It is the only tool developed in Brazil with version available in Portuguese.

New Product development (NPD) is getting even more significant to the entrepreneurship competitiveness due to the increasing market internationalization, to the product diversity and variety and the reduction of the product life cycle. This present work has as its main goal to propose a reference model adapted to NPD of technology-based companies (TBC) that produce electronics. This research follows a combined methodology approach, that is, a qualitative-quantitative approach. First, a qualitative approach is applied with the study of multiple cases in order to identify the NPD features based on electronics manufacturing. Then, a qualitative approach is employed with application on multi-criterion decision-making method as to select macro-phases, phases and activities from the proposed model for NPD. Finally, studies of multiple cases are carried out to verify the proposed model adequacy. The results analyses suggests that the proposed model may be considered convenient.

Analysis of the Environmental Management System based on ISO 14001 on the American continent

Fábio de Oliveira Neves; Eduardo Gomes Salgado; Luiz Alberto Beijo

Abstract This research analyzes the incorporation of risk management in the product development process (PDP) in auto parts companies, based on Advanced Product and Quality Planning (APQP), and emphasizes the delivery of project development proposed by the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) and conducts a review of the literature, establishing the theoretical foundations for its development. The research method used was action research, where data were collected through documentary analysis, interviews and researchers’ observations. The incorporation of risk management contributes to the PDP‑making processes, especially in the stages of qualitative risk analysis and planning of responses to risk, providing greater accuracy of the time and identification of critical activities. The factors that emerged as most important for guaranteeing the accuracy of the results are: team building; collective discussion of deadlines set, resulting in commitment; the role of project manager, providing feedback from the participants; the existence of objective evidence in support of senior management. It follows that team‑building impacts on risk management, as in the perceived risk to ongoing education.

The American continent is in broad economic and industrial development. Consequently, a more detailed discussion of the impacts generated by such development is needed. Moreover, there is an increase in the number of ISO 14001 certificates issued to this continent. Given the above, no studies were found that bridge the gap to identify the influence of different factors on ISO 14001 in the Americas. Thus, this article has as its main aim to check which economic, environmental and cultural factors have influence on ISO 14001 Certification in the American Continent. The data were collected in the ISO Survey, World Bank, United Nations Development Programme and International Energy Agency. Among the countries of that continent, thirteen were analyzed and only two did not show the economic factors as the influence factor in the multiple regression models fitted with Brazil and the United State. In these models, all presented environmental factors as influencing factors. Only in Brazil the index HDI presented as cultural factor in multiple regression model fitted. The economic factors: Gross Domestic Product and exports of goods and services and environmental: Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and fossil fuel consumption were the most influential in ISO 14001 certification. Venezuela, Uruguay, Colombia and the United States were countries that had factors dependent on each other, featuring the environmental marketing. Briefly, this study brings up several implications: to the academy, with the proposal of new concepts and guidance on the factors that assist in ISO 14001 certification in the American Continent. Additionally, taking into account the industry, the factors serve as efficiency parameters for the implementation of ISO 14001 standard, and for the Government to improve through factors that do not fit in multiple regression models.
