Ninety women with diagnosed fibromyalgia, work-related repetitive strain injury/osteoarticular diseases (RSI) and diseases related to the spinal column were submitted to individual listening of three musical pieces. Data were obtained by means of interviews and pain intensity was evaluated by the verbal numeric scale (0-10) before and after listening to the music. The mental images were quantified by analyzing the drawings made during each listening session. The three groups presented a statistically significant reduction in pain intensity at the end of the listening session (p<0.001). The mental images did not differ in quantity, between Ravel and Wagner. The Mix presented quantitatively lower results. The musical structures related to the production of images and the observed therapeutic effect suggests that structural analyses may contribute to the use of music by nursing.

Inpatient falls are common occurrences with negative effects for patients and institutions. The objective of this descriptive study was to present the results of a fall management protocol used in a private hospital located in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Follow-up consisted of reviewing the fall rates and performing a descriptive analysis of the data. Subjects were the patients admitted between 2005 and 2008, accounting for 284 falls in 207,067 patient-days. The rates showed a monthly variability, with reductions following the implementation of interventions and rises in rates after management actions and training. In 2008, falls were more frequent among patients in clinical units of greater complexity - the elderly - using drugs that affected the central nervous system or having an impaired gait. The performed actions caused a reduction in fall rates, and the characterization of the events permitted staff to redirect interventions focusing on patients who were more susceptible to falls, as well as strengthen educational actions.Inpatient falls are common occurrences with negative effects for patients and institutions. Being submitted to dialysis four hours a day, three times a week can mean experiencing boredom, besides discomfort. Patients often report that the time seems to take longer to go by. The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of two different musical rhythms in the states of mind and perception of adult patients undergoing dialysis, since the literature on this subject is scarce. The study was performed at a private hospital with 43 patients, who participated in two sessions of musical improvisation with a keyboard. The subjective states and perception were evaluated before and after the intervention. Over 80% of the patients felt that time went by faster after the interventions in both rhythms. However, the pace was a decisive factor in the kind of emotional experience that the patients had.Being submitted to dialysis four hours a day, three times a week can mean experiencing boredom, besides discomfort. Musculoskeletal chronic pain causes suffering and influences an individual’s quality of life, functioning, and independence. The purpose of this descriptive, comparative, and correlational study was to examine the effect of music on the intensity of musculoskeletal chronic pain among women with musculoskeletal chronic pain, and identify symbolic themes similarities and aesthetic reactions caused by mental images after listening to three music pieces(Bolero, Lohengrin, and Mix). Data were collected from 90 women suffering from specific chronic musculoskeletal pain(fibromyalgia, repetitive strains injuries, and spinal column diseases) using the Numerical Rating Scale. Differences in perceptions of pain were measured before and after classical music listening (Bolero – M. Ravel, Lohengrin – R.Wagner, and Mix – classical various). Drawing and verbal reports were also recorded to characterize mental images. Results of t-tests indicated that women in the three groups had less pain after listening to the music pieces (p< 0.001).Symbolic and aesthetically significant differences among the three musical pieces were also observed. The mix has shown lower results in mental image quantity in relation to Ravel and Wagner’s music, both symbolically and aesthetically, with predominance of descriptive images. These findings indicate that music is an effective nursing intervention that can be used to relieve musculoskeletal chronic pain.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the use of a severity indicator for end-stage liver disease as a predictor of resource use in a teaching hospital in São Paulo. METHOD Descriptive, retrospective study, classifying independent variables in seven key dimensions: identification/risk rating; length of stay/use of advanced life support; imaging; clinical analysis; special procedures; blood products in the intensive care unit; and in the operating room. The frequencies were analyzed by linear regression analysis of variance to detect relevance due to the dependent variable (severity indicator) in 76 cases seen in 2013. RESULTS Among the variables studied, those that presented relevance due to the functional risk score were laboratory measurements of bilirubin, amylase, transaminase, blood count, creatine phosphokinase (p<0.05), hemotherapy procedures fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and platelet concentrate (p<0.05), and Doppler echocardiography image (p<0.07). CONCLUSION Given the results/objective of this study, it is concluded that the indicator presents a potential predictive capability in the use of postoperative resources of liver receptors in the size, clinical analysis, images and hemotherapy dimensions.
