Roots of symptom-free leguminous cover crop and living mulch species harbor diverse Fusarium communities that show highly variable aggressiveness on pea (Pisum sativum)

Leguminous cover crop and living mulch species show not only great potential for providing multiple beneficial services to agro-ecosystems, but may also present pathological risks for other crops in rotations through shared pathogens, especially those of the genus Fusarium. Disease severity on roots of subterranean clover, white clover, winter and summer vetch grown as cover crop and living mulch species across five European sites as well as the frequency, distribution and aggressiveness to pea of Fusarium spp. recovered from the roots were assessed in 2013 and 2014. Disease symptoms were very low at all sites. Nevertheless, out of 1480 asymptomatic roots, 670 isolates of 14 Fusarium spp. were recovered. The most frequently isolated species in both years from all hosts were F. oxysporum and F. avenaceum accounting for 69% of total isolation percentage. They were common at the Swiss, Italian and German sites, whereas at the Swedish site F. oxysporum dominated and F. avenaceum occurred only rarely. The agressiveness and effect on pea biomass were tested in greenhouse assays for 72 isolates of six Fusarium species. Isolates of F. avenaceum caused severe root rot symptoms with mean severity index (DI) of 82 and 74% mean biomass reduction compared to the non-inoculated control. Fusarium oxysporum and F. solani isolates were higly variable in agressiveness and their impact on pea biomass. DI varied between 15 and 50 and biomass changes relative to the non-inoculated control -40% to +10%. Isolates of F. tricinctum, F. acuminatum and F. equiseti were non to weakly agressive often enhancing pea biomass. This study shows that some of the major pea pathogens are characterized by high ecological plasticity and have the ability to endophytically colonize the hosts studied that thus may serve as inoculum reservoir for susceptible main legume grain crops such as pea.

Assessment of the state of agroecosystem sustainability using landscape indicators: a comparative study of three rural areas in Greece

ABSTRACT The research was based on a comparative study of three representative rural areas (Dovras, Larissa, and Messapia) in Greece. Remote sensing data were collected (maps, aerial photographs) for the landscape analysis and elaborated using GIS linked with economic and social parameters regarding land use. By using a selected core set of landscape indicators, this research aims at providing a useful tool for assessing agroecosystem management at territorial level and hopefully assist decision-making for the promotion of sustainability. The selected tool showed that the study area of Messapia presented the highest level of environmental sustainability, while the area of Dovras showed the best combination of agricultural productivity and landscape management. Results showed that the ecoregions of Dovras, Larissa, and Messapia presented a landscape composed of important ecological function areas in the percentages of 40%, 15%, and 70%, respectively, and of cultivated areas in the percentages of 55%, 71.19%, and 19.75%, respectively.

Influence of organic management on As bioavailability: Soil quality and tomato As uptake

The research studied the effects of organic vs. conventional management of soil quality and tomato yield quality, cultivated in a geogenic arsenic contaminated soil. The chemical and biochemical properties were analyzed to evaluate soil quality, arsenic mobility and its phyto-availability, as well as arsenic accumulation in the tomato plant tissues and if tomatoes cultivated in arsenic rich soil represents a risk for human health. A general improvement of tomato growth and soil quality was observed in the organic management, where soil organic carbon increased from 1.24 to 1.48% and total nitrogen content. The arsenic content of the soil in the organic management increased from 57.0 to 65.3 mg kg-1, probably due to a greater content of organic matter which permitted the soil to retain the arsenic naturally present in irrigation water. An increase of bioavailable arsenic was observed in the conventional management compared to the organic one (7.05 vs 6.18 mg kg-1). The bioavailable form of metalloid may affect soil microbial community structure assessed using El-FAME analysis. The increase of the total arsenic concentration in the organic management did not represent a stress factor for soil microbial biomass carbon (Cmic), which was higher in the organic management than in the conventional one (267 vs. 132 μg Cmic g-1). Even if the organic management caused an increase of total arsenic concentration in the soil due to the enhanced organic matter content, retaining arsenic from irrigation water, this management mitigates the arsenic uptake by tomato plants reducing the mobility of the metalloid.

Populationsdynamik pflanzenparasitärer Nematoden in Abhängigkeit von Kulturart, Bodenbearbeitung und Untersaaten/Zwischenfrüchten in verschiedenen Klimaregionen Europas

Die Daten der Vergleichsbetriebe stellen den Status quo im Pflanzenschutz in Deutschland dar. Der Behandlungsindex in Mohre und Frischkohl betrug im Durchschnitt der Jahre (2007-2014) bei 6,2 bzw. 9,2. Mohren wurden vorrangig mit Herbiziden und Frischkohl mit Insektiziden behandelt. Unter dem Aspekt des Pflanzenschutzes und zur Reduktion der Behandlungsintensitat mit Insektiziden kann Abbildung 1: Behandlungsindex der Herbizide (Herbizid-BI) in Abhangigkeit der Vorfrucht in den Vergleichsbetrieben fur Mohre, 2007-2014, in Deutschland, ungleiche Buchstaben symbolisieren signifikante Unterschiede (p<0,05), nBlattfrucht=58, nGemuse=28, nHalmfruchte=115 208 72. ALVA-Tagung, Seminarhotel Wesenufer, 2017 der Fruhkohlanbau empfohlen werden. Im Kohl- und Mohrenanbau konnen Halmvorfruchte Schadlingsbefall vorbeugen. Die Mittelaufwandmengen wurden vorrangig bei Herbizidanwendungen reduziert In beiden Kulturen wurden Abweichungen vom notwendigen Mas verzeichnet. Die Pflanzenschutzberatung sowie die regelmasige Durchfuhrung von Bonituren konnen Pflanzenschutzmittelanwendungen dem notwendigen Mas naher bringen und die Umsetzung des IPS in der Praxis verbessern. Fur die Ausschopfung nichtchemischer Masnahmen sind Praxisdemonstrationen und der intensive Austausch zwischen Wissenschaft und Praxis notig, genauso wie Forschungsforderung zur Entwicklung neuer und Optimierung bestehender integrierter Verfahren und neuer Wirkstoffe. Vorbildhaft wird der IPS von den Demonstrationsbetrieben u. a. in den Kulturen Mohre und Weiskohl, seit 2014 umgesetzt. Die Betriebe werden individuell und intensiv betraten, um Pflanzenschutzmittelanwendungen auf das notwendige Mas zu beschranken. Hierfur werden Bonituren unter Nutzung von Schadschwellen, Warndiensthinweisen und Monitoringverfahren durchgefuhrt.
