Looking at both sides: how specific characteristics of academic research groups and firms affect the geographical distance of university–industry linkages

This paper examines factors that affect the geographical distance of university–industry linkages by analysing specific characteristics of both sides of the collaboration – firms and universities. Previous studies have provided important evidence related to this issue; however, they have used data from either firms or universities. Therefore, this paper contributes to existing research on this issue by using information on both collaboration partners. For this purpose, data from the Directory of Research Groups in Brazil are used to estimate an empirical model. The main results indicate that firms with higher absorptive capacity and larger firms tend to collaborate with research groups that are more geographically distant. Further, on the university side, high-performance and larger research groups tend to attract firms that are more geographically distant as collaboration partners. Long-distance collaborations therefore usually occur when firms require high absorptive capacity and when they cannot find high-quality local universities.

Is cognitive proximity a driver of geographical distance of university–industry collaboration?

ABSTRACT This paper examines the relationship between geographical and cognitive proximity in university–industry collaboration in Brazil. Data from university–industry collaborations were used and a measure for cognitive proximity was built based on correspondence analysis. The main results show that cognitive proximity is a substitute for geographical proximity because shared capabilities and expertise between a university and the collaborating firm stimulate long-distance collaboration. The results provide new empirical evidence for the relationship between geographical proximity and a form of non-spatial proximity in a developing country. Moreover, these findings add a new driver, cognitive proximity, that affects long-distance university–industry collaboration.

Entendendo a Configuração de Estudos Sobre Organizações Virtuais: uma Síntese de Temas para Pesquisas Futuras

A utilizacao das novas tecnologias tornou possivel agilizar negocios e transacoes, reforcar os modelos de cooperacao, as aliancas estrategicas e as redes internas e externas as empresas, alem de propiciar competitividade, inovacao e exploracao de novos mercados. Nesse contexto, a organizacao virtual tornou-se um importante tema de pesquisa. Porem, dada a complexidade do tema, diversas areas tem estudado as organizacoes virtuais sob diferentes aspectos, o que pode dificultar o direcionamento e a contribuicao de pesquisas relativas ao tema. Com o objetivo de identificar e avaliar a producao bibliografica dos ultimos anos, foi possivel entender a configuracao recente de pesquisa para servir como fonte para futuras oportunidades de pesquisa. Assim, a partir de revisao sistematica da literatura, foi criada uma classificacao para analisar as caracteristicas dos eventos e das revistas cientificas, nas quais essas referencias foram publicadas. Apesar do metodo sistematico utilizado para a busca das referencias, este trabalho nao pode ser considerado exaustivo e foi realizado com o intuito de explorar e descrever os temas de estudo sobre cooperacao e inovacao nas organizacoes virtuais. Notou-se que, independentemente do canal (evento, revista), a maioria das referencias diz respeito, primeiro, a Computacao ou Sistemas e, em segundo lugar, a Gestao ou Producao, duas vertentes de estudos com oportunidades para futuras pesquisas. Pesquisadores do tema ou novos interessados podem, assim, compreender a configuracao dos estudos em linhas passiveis de ser exploradas futuramente.
