Using structural equation modeling: patterns and trends of publications in Brazilian journals

Jorge Ramón D’Acosta Rivera; Rafael Ricardo Jacomossi; Alcides Barrichello; Rogerio Scabim Morano

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze patterns and trends of articles that present the use of structural equation modeling (SEM) and that were published in several Brazilian journals. In addition, this paper maps the institutions where the authors of the identified articles are affiliated, and discusses aspects of searching the articles in journals’ archives and other scientific databases. Design/methodology/approach The work used bibliometrics, which is one of the forms of evaluation and measurement of information flows in scientific knowledge, using mathematical and statistical methods. Findings The study showed an exponential growth in using SEM in several areas in recent years, with predominance in marketing. Most of the publications were produced by authors from institutions such as USP, FGV and UFRGS, but most authors published only one article using SEM. Almost all published articles used one of the three most common software, especially AMOS®. Surprisingly, many articles did not mention the software used, indicating methodological flaw. Practical implications Weaknesses were found regarding the search for articles in the different sources used, indicating that, for literature reviews, the research should be conducted in several databases in a complementary way and not alternatively. This fact becomes critical especially when expressions in languages other than Portuguese were used. This situation suggests an aggravating lack of visibility for the Brazilian scientific community since the articles are less likely to be found. Originality/value The paper shows that among the various techniques of multivariate data analysis used in the field of administration, SEM has gained prominence being operationalized using specific software.

Can small groups avoid the tragedy of the commons

Rogerio Scabim Morano; Edmilson Alves de Moraes; Rafael Ricardo Jacomossi

In this research, an agent-based simulation seeks to discuss the tragedy of the commons, collective intelligence and institutions developed by social groups. The concept of the tragedy of the commons states that you can always expect environmental degradation when many individuals freely exploit a scarce resource of common use. Hardin (Science 162:1243–1248, 1968) proposes two alternatives to deal with it: state or privatized administration. However, it is possible another alternative of self-coordination when the social groups are small. That is, the tragedy of the commons could be faced when the synergy within the group—collective intelligence—develops. The focus of this paper is to analyze small groups who promote their coordination to achieve collective goals, aimed at the preservation and perpetuation of scarce natural resources of common use. The results of this research show that the extreme exhaustion of the environment and consequent dissolution of the group that depends on it, is easily observed in many circumstances. However, in small groups, the self-coordination through the development of strong institutions may avoid an eventual tragic outcome of total environment degradation. Additionally, it has been found that social identity influences the behavior of the individuals, determining the social structures.

Fluxo de vasilhames de GLP P-13 entre diferentes empresas de um mercado

Ana Carolina Ferrarini; Rogerio Scabim Morano; Alcides Barrichello

Through agent-based simulation was modeled a market where alliances between companies to complement the competences and abilities are fundamental to exploiting new opportunities. The strategic enterprise behavior based on management, in order to attend the goals of stakeholders or shareholders must affect the alliances and their levels. Enterprises facing market opportunities which request strategic alliances can or cannot cooperate on the others according to their strategic behavior profiles and according to the historical cooperation evaluation of their potential partners. The model of agent-based simulation proposed for such essay, uses roles based on Sugarscape, on prisoner dilemma for n-players and concepts existents about cooperation, stakeholders and shareholders theories and enterprise alliances. It has been verified that the emergence of cooperation can occur, but depends on how fierce is the competition in terms of existing firms in the market initially and the diversity of firms in terms of their internal cost structures.

Conduct, Cooperation and Alliances: An Analysis of Interaction among Firms Using an ABS

Rogerio Scabim Morano; Edmilson Alves de Moraes

The It was modeled a market where alliances are fundamental for complementing competences and abilities. The firms need those alliances to exploiting new opportunities. The strategic enterprise behavior must affect the alliances and their intensity and fragility levels. Enterprises facing market opportunities which request strategic alliances can or cannot cooperate on the others according to their strategic behavior profiles and according to the historical cooperation evaluation of their potential partners. The model of agent-based simulation proposed for such essay, uses roles based on Sugars cape, on prisoner dilemma for n-players and concepts existents about cooperation, stakeholders and shareholders theories and enterprise alliances. It has been verified that the emergence of cooperation can occur, but depends on how fierce is the competition in terms on density and internal cost structures.
