BACKGROUND/PURPOSE Ischemia-reperfusion injury is encountered frequently in conditions that diminish intestinal blood flow. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), which is a specific component of the honeybee hive product propolis, exhibits potential antioxidant properties. This experimental study was designed to determine the effect of CAPE on ischemia-reperfusion injury in rat intestine. METHODS Fifty rats were divided into 5 groups; sham (SH), saline ischemia (SI), saline reperfusion (SR), CAPE ischemia (CI), and CAPE reperfusion (CR). Either CAPE, 10 micromol/kg, or saline was administered intraperitoneally 30 minutes before ischemia. Intestinal ischemia for 30 minutes and reperfusion for 60 minutes were applied. Ileum specimens were obtained to determine the tissue levels of malondialdehyde, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and histological changes. RESULTS Malondialdehyde levels in the CR group did not increase after reperfusion when compared with the CI group. However, statistically significant differences were observed between the SR and SI groups. Additional mucosal injury in the CR group when compared with the CI group was not observed. Whereas, there was a statistically significant increase in mucosal injury in the SR group. Reperfusion did not cause further injuries through both biochemical and histological parameters in the CR group. CONCLUSIONS Results of this study showed that prophylactic administration of CAPE in ischemic condition prevents reperfusion injuries by eliminating oxygen radicals and inhibiting polymorphonuclear leukocyte infiltration. CAPE may be useful in combating the diseases of oxidative stress.

Supernumerary breast tissue: A case of pseudomamma on the face

Uğur Koltuksuz; Engin Aydin

Supernumerary breast tissue usually develops along the milk line. But occasionally, it may be seen outside the milk line. In this article, the authors describe a case of pseudomamma on the face, one of the rarest locations for supernumerary breast tissue. The lesion was removed for cosmetic reasons. There was no associated anomaly.

Actinomycosis is a chronic, suppurative, and granulomatous disease caused by an anaerobic or microaerophilic gram-positive bacterium, Actinomyces israelii, manifesting itself as fistula, sinus, inflammatory pseudotumor, or abscess formation. The cervicofacial region (50 to 65%) accounts for the majority of the cases followed by abdomen (20%) (1–5). Abdominal infection mostly involves the cecal area and can simulate malignant tumor on clinical and radiological examinations (1, 4, 6, 7). The diagnosis is almost always ascertained after surgery and histopathological examination of the specimen. The purpose of this report is to emphasize the possibility of encountering an abdominal mass related to actinomycosis in emergency cases and the benefit of limited surgical procedure.

PurposeTo evaluate the expression of c-kit (CD117) in endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial cancer.MethodsExpression of c-kit in 10 normal endometrium, 18 simple endometrial hyperplasia, 16 complex endometrial hyperplasia (10 cases with atypia and 6 cases without atypia), and 6 endometrial cancer were investigated by immunohistochemistry.Resultsc-Kit expression decreased as the lesion progressed to endometrial cancer. Immunostaining was mostly focal and weak in the normal endometrium and was mostly diffuse and strong in the simple and complex endometrial hyperplasia.ConclusionsSimple and complex hyperplastic endometrial tissues express diffuse cytoplasmic staining for c-kit and the expression decreases with the progression of the lesion.

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis of the vulva

Yusuf Kenan Coban; Ahmet Hamdi Aytekin; Engin Aydin

Background: In the present study, calcinosis cutis (CC) is defined as the deposition of amorphous calcium and phosphate salts under epidermis and it may be caused by a pre-existing event such as extravasation injury or hypercalcemic conditions. Idiopathic CC cases have no underlying disease or pre-existing cause. Aim: A demostrative vulvar idiopathic CC case presentation and review of the related literature. Methods: A 42-year-old multiparous female presented with vulvar nodular masses. She was keen on surgical removal of the lesions, as the masses caused dyscomfort during sexual intercourse. The lesions were removed and sent for histopathological examination. There was neither a history of trauma nor any inflammatory process in the vulvar skin prior to the development of lesions and no systemic abnormality was detected. Results and Conclusions: The histhopathologic evaluation of the biopsy specimen showed amorphous calcium deposits without any inflammatory infiltration in the dermis. There was no recurrence at 1 years follow-up. This case shows that idiopathic CC may develop slowly at labio-vulvar region in a sexually active female with normal systemic or laboratory findings

An unusual presentation of metastatic adenocarcinoma in the cerebellum associated with intratumoral hemorrhage mimicking a stroke. A case report

Serhat Fuat Erten; Ertuğul Ertaş; Cengiz Duygulu; Engin Aydin; Ahmet Çolak

Spontaneous bleeding from a metastatic tumor in the brain is usually associated with melanoma, choriocarcinoma, or hypernephroma. We report a patient with rectum adenocarcinoma which metastasized into the cerebellum and mimicked a stroke, and discuss the clinical features and diagnostic problems of this uncommon condition.
