This study analyzes the influence of socioeconomic status, quality of family context and sibling status on cognitive development in a sample of 551 five‐year‐old children. The regression analyses confirmed the predictive value of socioeconomic status and quality of family context on cognitive development. The quality of family context mediates the relation between socioeconomic status and cognitive development. None of the variables relating to the sibling group showed a significant relationship with cognitive development.

An educational proposal based on sibling relationships is presented in this paper. A group of criteria has been prepared from current research data, which may be useful for professionals working on family counselling and family assessment. Given the deep impact that family interaction has on psychological development, the aim of this proposal is to use sibling interaction as a source of stimulation to improve developmental processes. A reference guide to help deal with everyday problems in sibling relationships, is also presented. The proposal is concluded with a questionnaire designed to obtain some information about how parents think and act with regard to sibling relationships in relation to cognitive, social and emotional development, and also about sibling conflict. Family counselling criteria can be set according to the results of the questionnaire. An educational proposal based on sibling relationships is presented in this paper. ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of an assessment and preventive education experience involving 50 families with children aged 2. The families were assessed by means of an interview conducted during a home visit, and were subsequently provided with a series of everyday parenting guidelines. The results provide empirical evidence of the effectiveness of family assessment and preventive education strategies in the educational, health and social services fields.

ABSTRACT This study showcases the collaborative work between, on the one side, the Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Services, and Equality and the Federation of Municipalities and Provinces and, on the other side, a consortium of eight Spanish universities. The aims are to implement a positive parenting policy to adopt codes of professional best practices to improve prevention work with families. Sixty professionals from 30 local agencies collaborated in the drafting of a Guide of Best Practices in Positive Parenting and the development of an e-tool (http://familiasenpositivo.org). The e-tool allows for the assessment of 25 best practices and 188 indicators to improve the quality of positive parenting services, the professional work done with families, and the programmes provided. The process of dissemination among professionals is also described. Results showed that the e-tool is an instrument that is reliable and useful to introduce a culture of best practices and to promote quality assurance in the services.
