OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to investigate the frequency and pattern of bifid mandibular condyles (BMCs). METHODS A retrospective study was performed using panoramic radiographs from 10 200 patients undergoing dental treatment in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology (Erzurum, Turkey) between 1996 and 2008. RESULTS Of the 10 200 patients, 32 (0.3%) had BMCs, of whom 17 were female (53.1%) and 15 were male (46.9%). The age range of the patients with BMCs was 5 to 71 years (mean age 30.0+/-0.40). Of these 32 patients, 24 (75.0%) had unilateral and 8 (25.0%) had bilateral BMCs, none of the patients had a history of trauma. No symptoms associated with bifid condyles were observed in any of the patients with BMCs. CONCLUSIONS It is possible that BMC is a more frequent condition than is commonly perceived. However, because of the minimal symptoms associated with this condition, the authors believe that it will remain an incidental finding upon routine radiographic examination, rather than a clinical observation. Nevertheless, in symptomatic cases or in cases where surgical treatment is planned, panoramic radiographs should be supplemented with CT.

AIM To report that arsenical pastes are still employed in endodontics and to highlight the potentially serious consequences of their use. SUMMARY Chemotherapeutic agents such as arsenic trioxide and paraformaldehyde were once commonly employed as pulp-necrotizing agents. Their cytotoxic effects are well recognized, and leakage from teeth has been associated with widespread necrosis of periodontal tissues and bone. This report describes two cases of severe bone necrosis affecting the mandible following the use of an arsenical paste. KEY LEARNING POINTS Pulp-necrotizing agents such as arsenic trioxide can cause severe bone necrosis. Arsenical pastes have no place in contemporary dental practice. Dentists should employ appropriate local anaesthetic techniques for pulp extirpation instead of relying on toxic necrotizing agents.

PURPOSE The effect of a single-dose of pre-emptive pregabalin is still unknown, although it is used as an adjuvant in controlling acute postoperative pain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of pre-emptive single-dose pregabalin on postoperative acute pain and 24-hour opioid consumption in patients who underwent double-jaw surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS Forty patients (18 to 45 yr old; American Society of Anesthesiologists status I to II) for whom elective double-jaw surgery was planned under general anesthesia were included in this study, which had been planned as a prospective, randomized, and double-blinded study. Patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: the pregabalin group (n = 20) was given pregabalin 150 mg orally 1 hour before general anesthesia and the placebo group (n = 20) was given an oral placebo capsule. The groups were administered the routine general anesthesia protocol. Postoperative analgesia was performed intravenously in the 2 groups twice a day with dexketoprofen trometamol 50 mg and patient-controlled analgesia with fentanyl. Postoperative analgesia was evaluated using the visual analog scale (VAS). Fentanyl consumption, additional analgesia requirement, and side-effects were recorded during the first 24 hours after surgery. Descriptive and bivariate statistics were computed, and significance was set at a P value less than .05. RESULTS Compared with placebo, the VAS score was statistically lower in the pregabalin group during the early postoperative period (P < .05). The 24-hour opioid consumption was significantly higher in the placebo group compared with the pregabalin group (509.40 ± 261.56 vs. 260.10 ± 246.53 μq, respectively; P = .004). In addition, the analgesia requirement was statistically lower in the pregabalin group (P < .05). Nausea or vomiting was observed more often in the placebo group, whereas other side-effects were similar for the 2 groups. CONCLUSION A single 150-mg dose of pre-emptive pregabalin decreased postoperative opioid consumption in the first 24 hours after double-jaw surgery. Multimodal analgesia techniques that contain pre-emptive analgesia can be used successfully in preventing postoperative pain caused by orthognathic surgery.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the age, gender, and sites of different types of odontogenic cysts (OCs) and non-OCs (nOCs) (seen in eastern Anatolian population in Turkey. Materials and Methods: The following data were collected from the clinical records and histopathology reports of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Oral Pathology, Ataturk University, Turkey, during a period of 10 years. They were analyzed descriptively in terms of incidence, age, sex, cyst type, and site. Results: A total of 526 cysts were diagnosed during a 10-year period. Of these, 330 (62.7%) were in males, and 196 (37.3%) were in females, the male:female ratio was 1.7:1. There were 509 (96.8%) OCs and 17 (3.2%) nOCs. There were 406 (77.2%) inflammatory OCs and 103 (19.6%) developmental OCs. Radicular cysts were the most frequent (66.4%), followed by dentigerous (19.2%) and residual (10.8%) cysts. Only nasopalatine duct cyst was found as nOC in this study (3.2%). Conclusion: The distribution of jaw cysts in the Turkish Eastern Anatolian population is relatively similar to that of other populations reported in previous studies in the literature, in which most OCs were of inflammatory origin. However, the relative rates of cysts were higher than those reported in other studies.

Odontoma is the most common odontogenic tumor that is radiographically and histologically characterized by the production of mature enamel, dentin, cementum and pulp tissue. It grows slowly and has nonaggressive behavior. This case report presents clinical, radiological and pathological findings of bilateral complex odontoma that is rarely in literature in a 30-year-old female patient.

Purpose: The purpose was to examine the prevalence, gender, age and site(s) of odontogenic and nonodontogenic benign tumors, and tumor-like lesions occurring in the oral cavity and jaws in a Turkish population, particularly, in the Eastern Turkey, and to compare findings of this study with other reports. Materials and Methods: The data were collected from the files of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the Department of Oral Pathology, Ataturk University, Turkey, during a 10-year period from January 2005 to January 2015. They were analyzed descriptively regarding prevalence, age, sex, lesion type, and site. Results: A total of 709 benign tumor and tumor-like lesions of the oral cavity, and jaws were selected during a period of 10 years. One hundred and twenty-one of these lesions (17%) were odontogenic benign tumors while 588 (83%) were nonodontogenic benign tumor and tumor-like lesions. Conclusions: This study revealed that the distribution and characteristics of benign tumors and tumor-like lesions of oral cavity and jaws in the Turkish population, particularly including the Eastern region of Turkey have some differences as well as similarities with the findings of studies in different populations.

AbstractMandibular deformities present with infinite variation with different aesthetic and functional problems. Orthognathic surgery is required to achieve satisfactory results for functional and aesthetically in mandibular prognathism patient. Setback of the mandible to correct mandibular prognathism is a well-known procedure. The 2 most frequently used techniques are the intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy and the bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO). Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy is an effective and commonly used method to correct mandibular prognathism. In this patient report, mandibular prognathism in female monozygotic twin patients was treated with BSSRO is presented.

The presence of teeth at birth or within a month post-delivery is a rare condition. The exact etiology has not been proved yet, but there is a correlation between natal teeth and hereditary, environmental factors and some syndromes. A newborn 3-day-old male, with two mandibular incisor natal teeth was examined. The teeth were mobile and were extracted because of the fear of aspiration and refusal to feed. In this report, we present a case of pigmented natal teeth in mandible and treatment with extraction.
