Heavy metal pollution and its relation to the malformation of green mussels cultured in Muara Kamal waters, Jakarta Bay, Indonesia

Jakarta Bay has become contaminated by both organic and inorganic pollutants, including heavy metals. This study aimed to examine the effect of heavy metal pollution on green mussels cultured in Muara Kamal Waters, Jakarta Bay over seven months. In this research, the water quality was assessed, through measuring the concentrations of the heavy metals, Hg, Pb, Cd, Cr, and Sn in the water, and in the tissue of green mussels that had been cultured there for seven months. The percentage of congenital abnormalities (malformations) in the green mussels was analyzed descriptively and the relationship between the water quality, heavy metals, and green mussel malformation was studied through principal component analysis (PCA). The result showed that the heavy metals concentrations in the water and sediment exceeded the quality standard at Muara Kamal but that in other respects the water quality was quite good. The green mussels cultured there for seven months had accumulated high concentrations of heavy metals, and ±60% of them had malformations of their shells. Based on the heavy metal concentrations in their bodies, the main cause of malformations in green mussels was suspected to be Pb, Hg, and Sn. However, the result of PCA showed it was the interaction between nitrogen compounds, phosphate, turbidity, salinity, pH, as well as the heavy metals in the water that determined the green mussel abnormality.

STRATEGI PENGELOLAAN LIMBAH DI PELABUHAN ARAR KABUPATEN SORONG YANG BERKELANJUTAN

Pelabuhan Arar merupakan pelabuhan yang sedang berkembang dan terletak di kawasan ekonomi khusus, sehingga menghasilkan limbah dan sampah yang semakin banyak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk memformulasi strategi pengelolaan limbah di Pelabuhan Arar Kabupaten Sorong yang berkelanjutan. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan wawancara terhadap lima pakar ahli yang dipilih secara purposive dengan bantuan kuesioner khusus untuk keperluan analisis AHP. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan analytical hierarchy process (AHP) menggunakan perangkat lunak expert choice 2000. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan bahwa ada tiga strategi utama yang perlu dilakukan agar pengelolaan limbah di Pelabuhan Arar Kabupaten Sorong menjadi berkelanjutan, yakni membuat pengolahan limbah dan sampah menjadi satu kebiasaan dan budaya keseharian (habituasi) dari masyarakat, mencari dan menerapkan teknologi zerowaste serta melakukan penegakan hukum.

Distribusi Ukuran Spasial-Temporal dan Berdasarkan Tingkat Kematangan Gonad Rajungan (Portunus pelagicus Linnaeus 1758) di Teluk Lasongko, Buton Tengah, Sulawesi Tenggara

The aim of the study was to reveal spatial-temporal distribution of the blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus Linnaeus 1758) in terms of size and gonad maturity stage of both male and female. Sampling of crab was conducted with a gill net from April 2013 until March 2014 in Lasongko Bay. Of the whole population the mean size of male was smaller than that of females. Spatially smaller crabs (juveniles and young ones) inhabited mostly inner side of the bay, while medium size crabs occurred in the middle part of the bay. Big crabs were mostly found in the outer side of the bay. In terms of time, big sise of male and female crabs were collected in period of October to November and September to March, respectively. Small size of male and female occurred in February to September and in April, respectively. Related to gonad maturity, the sizes of both sexes with mature stages were variable. Ovigerous female (OF) was presence widely in the bay, but the size of ovigerous females living in the shallow part of the bay was smaller than those living in the deeper part. Status pencemaran dan kandungan logam berat pada simping (Placuna placenta) di Pesisir Kabupaten Tangerang

Abstract . The objective of study was to analyze the status of water pollution and heavy metal content on water, sediment and scallop in Tangerang Coastal Waters. The Storet index method was used to determine the status of pollution. Sampling was conducted for three times at two months interval. The content of heavy metals in water, sediment and scallop analyzed descriptively based on the applicable regulations. The results showed that the status of Tangerang Coastal Water was classified as moderate and hight polluted. The content of Pb in scallop from Cituis Coastal has been exceeded the quality standards established by BPOMand WHO, so it is not sutible to consump. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis status pencemaran perairan di Pesisir Kabupaten Tangerang dan kandungan logam berat pada air, sedimen dan simping di Pesisir Kabupaten Tangerang. Metode yang digunakan untuk mengetahui status pencemaran yaitu dengan metode indeks Storet. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan selama tiga kali dengan interval waktu dua bulan. Kandungan logam berat di air, sedimen dan simping dianalisis secara deskriptif berdasarkan peraturan yang berlaku. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa status perairan Pesisir Kabupaten Tangerang tergolong tercemar sedang hingga berat. Kandungan logam berat Pb pada simping di Perairan Cituis telah melampaui baku mutu yang ditetapkan baik menurut BPOM tahun 2009 maupun WHO, sehingga tidak baik untuk dikonsumsi.
