A novel protocol for downloadable CAS

Youngho Jeong; Soonchoul Kim; Heejeong Kim; Han-Seung Koo; Eunjung Kwon

This paper presents a novel protocol for downloadable conditional access system (DCAS) which can securely download conditional access (CA) software via bidirectional communication channel. The proposed DCAS protocol uses pre-assigned keys and certificates for mutual authentication between a DCAS headend and DCAS host, and then it shares a session key for encrypting and decrypting CA software to be downloaded to a DCAS host. In order to verify the stability and effectiveness of the proposed protocol, we implement the DCAS protocol simulator. It can emulate the function of DCAS entities and the process of messages for mutual authentication, session key sharing and code downloading. Finally, experimental results indicate that the proposed protocol satisfies the design requirements for DCAS1.

An implementation of PC state management in IP networks

Sungwon Byon; Eunjung Kwon; Eui-Suk Jung; Yong-Tae Lee; Won Ryu

In this paper, an implementation of remote waking-up Personal Computers (PCs) through UDP and Wake On LAN (WOL) is presented. With the implementation, PCs can be sus pende d w hile it is in idle time. Also, PCs can be waked up interactively from remote site when users want to perform required tasks. There is a few barriers to wake a PC up from remote site using WOL. By providing a solution for the barriers, PCs can be in low power states while required tasks can be performed as necessary after the wakeup. Proposed implementation can be applied to IT devices that have similar architecture and communication interface to PCs.

An implementation of STB state management through UDP and WOL

Sungwon Byon; Eunjung Kwon; Eui-Suk Jung; Yong-Tae Lee; Won Lyu

In this paper, an implementation of state management for IPTV Set Top Box(STB) through UDP and WOL is presented. With the implementation, IPTV STB can be hibernated while TV is not being watched. Also, the STB can be waked up from remote site when required tasks have to be performed. So, the STB will be in low power consumption state while required tasks can be performed as necessary. Power consumption decreases to 10%~67% of traditional IPTV standby according to modes. Proposed method can be applied to general Personal Computers(PCs) which have almost same network interface.

Recently, the more regulations of energy conservation have been emphasized, the more home appliance manufactures have made competitive efforts to improve the energy efficiency of their products. However, there have been no correlation analysis between energy-efficient home appliances and cloud technologies. While cloud services have been rapidly adopted in many service areas to guarantee a high return of investment (ROI) for service providers, Previous studies on power saving have been conducted to reduce the standby power consumption for home appliances, like a set-top box (STB), which can be worked as a thin client for cloud services, or have only shown power models of a virtual machine (VM) on the cloud side without considering the power consumption states of its corresponding thin clients As a result, this paper proposes a power-saving control framework (PSCF) that consumes low power levels for both on the cloud side and on a STB efficiently for providing cloud services. The experimental result shows that the proposed framework outperforms the experiment not applied with any other power saving method for cloud services in terms of power efficiency.

A cloud transcoder using download cache scheme

Eunjung Kwon; Shun-Shim Chun; Young-Tae Lee; Won Ryu

The benefits of transcoding make it possible an incompatible or obsolete contents to be run at any device in a modern format. Nowadays, it is a common way to transcode contents to another format, different bitrates or qualities. As there are some limitations on the source computer which is like thin client with very low H/W specification, it is preferably recommended to be processed on the cloud environment recently. In this paper, we introduce a new way which uses a virtualization technology to provide transcoder resources as a cloud-service with efficient manner. This has the benefit that one can use scalable cloud infrastructure to transcode large amounts of data in a short time. Whereas, it has also drawback that is the time spent downloading source contents into the cloud. So, we design and implement a cloud transcoder with our own efficient scheme which can effectively improve the transcoding process time.

Reliable right management scheme in cable home network

Eunjung Kwon; O-Hyung Kwon; Su-In Lee

This paper presents a right management scheme in cable home network using cable modem with home gateway. The proposed scheme provides the control of right management via conditional access system from head-end of cable operator, as well as greater control flexibility of stored contents on digital video recorder to authorized devices in cable home network.

Object acquiring time saving scheme in data broadcasting [digital TV applications]

Eunjung Kwon; Han-Seung Koo; O-Hyung Kwon; Soo In Lee

This work provides an object acquiring time saving scheme at the set-top box (STB) in a data broadcasting service, using a DSM-CC object carousel. The waiting time for contents after a user start depends on the transmission interval of the contents or their parsing time in the STB after receiving the broadcasted data. Therefore, we can reduce the waiting time to run contents by broadcasting them with a very short interval or parsing them with high processing power in the STB. In this instance, we propose a novel and sophisticated scheme which can run contents quickly using a pre-processor in the head-end.
