SCULPTEUR: Multimedia Retrieval for Museums

Simon Goodall; Paul H. Lewis; Kirk Martinez; Patrick Sinclair; Fabrizio Giorgini; Matthew Addis; Michael Boniface; Christian Lahanier; James Stevenson

The paper describes the prototype design and development of a multimedia system for museums and galleries. Key elements in the system are the introduction of 3-D models of museum artefacts together with 3-D as well as 2-D content based retrieval and navigation facilities and the development of a semantic layer, centred on an ontology for museums, which aims to expose the richness of knowledge associated with the museum collections and facilitate concept based retrieval and navigation integrated with that based on content and metadata. Interoperability protocols are designed to allow external applications to access the collection and an example is given of an e-Learning facility which uses models extracted to a virtual museum.

The POLYMNIA project aims to develop an intelligent cross-media platform for personalised leisure and entertainment in thematic parks or venues. The system allows the visitors to be the real protagonist in the venue. Towards this goal, POLYMNIA platform is equipped with innovative imaging technologies for real time detection, localisation and tracking of i human contenti, i.e., the human visitor within the recoding being made in real-time by the system. No constraints are imposed on the variation of the environment. New, content-based media representation and organisation schemes will be developed to provide scalable, efficient and user-oriented description of the i human contenti, enabling efficient retrieval, access, and delivery across heterogeneous media platforms. In addition, adaptive mechanisms are employed to update the system response to the current usersi information needs and preferences

An Interoperable ePortfolio Tool for All

Fabrizio Giorgini

Accessible and interoperable ePortfolio system improves learning opportunities for users with disabilities by offering flexible learning paths and innovative ways of accessing information. However, most ePortfolio systems are closed systems within organisational boundaries and not accessible. This paper describes the efforts of the EU4ALL project to implement an accessible and open ePortfolio system. The result is a system that allows any user to map his learning journey from grade school to higher education and throughout their lifetime. A system where also disabled users control their own experiences, they choose what to include in their ePortfolio, how to reflect on and assess items, and with whom to share their ePortfolio.

Time2Competence: the PROLIX project

Fabrizio Giorgini; Volker Zimmermann; Nils Faltin; Luk Vervenne

The poster introduces PROLIX, an integrated project funded by the European Commission. PROLIX overall objective is to align learning with business processes in order to enable organisations to faster improve the competencies of their employees according to continuous changes of business requirements. To reach this goal, PROLIX is developing an open, integrated reference architecture for process-oriented learning and information exchange. The key innovation in PROLIX consists of a process- and competency driven framework for interlinking business process intelligence tools on the one hand with knowledge management and learning environments on the other.

M-learning manager: an emerging profession

Fabrizio Giorgini

The m-learning is emerging as a new sector in education and training provision, side by side with face-to-face education, distance education and e-learning. The m-learning introduced new pedagogical and technical paradigms for the design and delivery of m-learning materials. The e-learning manager not necessarily has the knowledge to manage m-learning projects or products thus a new profession is emerging: the m-Learning Manager. This paper focuses on what the mLeMan EC project is doing to define this new profession in terms of needed skill set and related learning materials useful to fill the current professional gap in the m-learning management.
